Just curious what apps everyone is using for for Overland GPS? I've heard some good things about Gaia GPS. Also any other apps you utilize when out an about off the beaten track?

Cheap tablet, Gaia, RAM mount and your set. I can't think of any other functionality I would want, Samsung Tab E 9.6, tabtite and connectors.

Make sure your cheap tablet has GPS.... Makes things a lot easier. Bought a Kindle Fire HD 8 because it was on sale and later found out it does NOT have GPS. Now I need to buy another tablet or dongle.

Good point, not that cheap lol. The tab can be had for $100 refurbished off eBay.

There are several threads on this topic already, search around and you'll find tons of information.

There are several cheap tablets with integrated GPS. The Galaxy Tab 7's have GPS and are like ~$100.

I just use my phone running Backcounty Navigator.

For a long time I've had my eye on a Tab 7 because I thought I wanted a bigger screen, but just haven't pulled the trigger yet. I see so many of these "overlander" type people with 3 different screens and other widgets all over the place. IMO that's not necessary, and actually quite distracting. So far, my phone is plenty big to see where I need to turn. I actually kept my old phone and use it exclusively for back country nav. The battery sucks so I have to keep it plugged in most of the time, but it works, and I can keep my phone handy for taking video/pics or whatever.

The first line was supposed to be intended for the OP, the rest was just an expansion of your $100 tablet comment.

Sorry for the poorly formatted post.

Have a page on my Samsung tablet that carries a bunch of travel related apps on a few rows:

Nav: Google maps, Gaia, a coordinates converter (Degrees/Decimal/UTM/etc), iOverlander

    Function/Comms: Switchpros app, Repeaterbook, APRSDroid

    Media: Spotify, Gopro app

Gaia GPS and Off Road are good as managed above. Hema is another one I believe that has US support now.

I was using Google Maps for a long time, but I would have to go and download the area that I was going to first. I recently got Gaia and I love it. You can download trails and create your own. I have been working with a friend and we are tracing some of the more popular trails in our area placing them on line.

You can view the trails and maps here There are also some links to download the maps.

If you have an Android phone you can have it simulate being a Bluetooth USB dongle and have your fire use it's signal.

Hey there, do you like your CB? I was looking to do a very similar set up!

Now I know I like that tablet set up too! RAMs look like the way to go.

Am I the only one that thinks Gaia is terrible? It’s like using Mapquest in the 90’s.

The CB or the location? Both have been working well regardless, a bit less leg room for copilot though.

My copilot is a dog. So hell be ok.
    :)
And both! Location primarily. Then it looks a lot like the Cobra 29 I was looking at getting. How did you run your antenna? And do you like it?
