Overland style suspension options?

    Hey guys I've searched far and wide and haven't found what I'm looking for in this forum so if you can help me out that be great I'm looking for a suspension setup that isn't long travel for overlanding. I don't care much about lift although I do want some but I mainly care about performance with my truck off roading I won't be doing any crazy rock crawling just basic off-roading and travels in the mountains over small River beds and maybe some minor rock crawling and teetering but half of life on the streets I'm not going to have crazy amounts of weight and do the full Overland install vehicle I just want to know that I have a good suspension setup here is what I've landed on from other forums and builds

    Bilistein 5100..... ofcourse
    Old man emu (leaning towards it)
    Fox 2.0 coilovers with adleafs and different shocks in the back
    And the rancho quicklift (underrated?)

    Seems like a proven set-up. There are hundreds of people with those parts on here raving about how good they are. This is also what I'm aiming for myself.

    All those parts are good-to-go from everything I have read. You should be very happy with any combination there.

    I can't vouch for the Rancho quicklift however, no knowledge on that.

    Sounds like your fine stock you don't need new shocks to drive over land.

    Your stock setup will do fine for regular trails. However if your suspension has never been changed it’s worth to upgrade to a new setup. Consider what you need and cool factors you want or meet somewhere in between. Saying you want a new setup for “overlanding” people on here might not take you serious or you just want the cool factor.

    Thankyou but I am literally trying to find the best set up for those long distance rough terrain drives without it being long travel I dont want to just add blocks on stock shocks for my tires and call it good I want good coilovers and an opinion on durability and ride quality for the rear like if add a leads are to stiff and what not

    These guys are just saying that based on what you want to do, even a stock suspension would be fine.

    I read their comments as:
    • kings, foxes, icons, etc. will be more than you need, but you can dump $$ if you want
    • bilstein and OME will be plenty
    • keeping it stock / replacing with stock components will be fine for you
    • ball busting

    If I could go back in time, I wouldve bought the complete OME kit from Low Range. Everything you need for like $1200. No questions, everything is included. I pieced together my 2" lift kit, it sounded like a better option financially at first but it has costed me more than that OME kit wouldve.

    I would go for a new leaf pack from all pro or something before buying a stock replacement. That’s what I have (bought used) but I wanted a little lift and some weight capacity for a RTT and motorcycle

    5100 are not bad all around but you’ll need a rear 1” block..

    A step up from this would be bilstein 6112 in front (60mm piston) and bilstein 5160 in rear (reservoir). This is geared toward better performance but still very nice driving on the road, and the price is manageable. And you don’t need a 1”block in the rear -You can run stock height if you’d like.

    A step up would be something like an icon full suspension system, stage 2, 3, 4..

    You could get bikstein 6112 front and 5160 rears with install/alignment for around $1,500.:thumbsup:

    Also I’m sure OME are fine, but they don’t even offer 1st gen Tacoma trucks as an option on their website.. which was sort of a deal breaker for me.

    Depends on what you are looking to spend. After 146k, it was definitely time to look at suspension. I ended up just replacing shocks only. It helped but really wasn't the solution (for me). I opted to spend some cash and went with the full Old Man Emu kit for our trucks: Couldn't be happier with the results. Pair this with the replaced steering rack bushings, inner and outer ties, lower ball joints & @Plastics Guy bumpstops - feels like a new truck. Had to do it over again, I would've ordered the OME kit with the AAL installed. Weight from my Leer cap and extra gear needs the AAL. Now I get to procrastinate until I decide to install the AALs sitting in the garage. :rofl:

    Just drive the thing stock, as-is. 100% stock trucks are perfectly capable off road.

    However, I would tend to steer you away from the bilstiens in the front and Fox in the rear. Better to get matched shocks on all 4 corners, imo. I'm currently running Kings in front with the 5100s out back, and while it's driveable and works okay, there is DEFINITELY room for improvement.

    You can get a full set of 5100's for around $350 (4 shocks). As others have said, you'll need to lift the rear about an inch since the rear 5100's are too long for stock height. I went with a longer shackle when I did mine (I hate blocks).

    If you're going to be replacing the springs too, you might as well go with the full kit from OME that @Area51Runner mensioned. About $1200 for springs, shocks, leafs and will give you about 2.5-3" lift. Then you'll have everything properly matched. There are a few other pieces you'll need like a diff drop kit (get one WITH the skid plate spacers), a rear brake line extension, but that's pretty much it.

    Awesome thanks man! And do you think I should swap at my uca's? Will that give me better travel and ride going over harder/tougher terrain?
