Hey everyone. I searched best I could for something related, but didn't find much. I'm looking for opinions, info and experiences (Pros/Cons) with campers who use or have used either an overland trailer(think Smittybily, Warhorse and etc.) with a RTT on it or an off road teardrop/squaredrop (think Bean, Hiker, NoBo and etc.) camper. I'm currently trying to decide which way I want to go for our first "camper"

We have been tent camping a couple years now, and we are ready to move up. We are looking for something small and light that has a bed, kitchen, water tank and some storage. The idea is that we keep all our gear in it other than food and water, so that at any moment we want to, we can hitch up and ride out. Trying to keep the total GVWR under 3500lbs. Want a price under $20k. Lower the better.

I've seen a few of each that I we like and are interested in. The super rugged "go anywhere" nature of an overland trailer with an RTT is appealing, as thats the main point of having one of these in the first place. We do a lot of camp ground camping currently, but the ability to overland and do dispersed off grid camping is becoming increasingly more important and desired to us. On the other hand, you are still in a tent and climate control and severe weather are issues here. Especially the latter. My wife freaks out in storms if we are in a tent.

Right now with my limited knowledge, I am looking at it like this.

    OverLand trailer /w RTT -
    PROS:
    Cheaper
    More rugged and reliable
    Goes more places
    Lighter weight
more customizable and easy to upgrade in future (can build to our needs as we are capable of. ie adding propane water heater and shower kit to it.)
    CONS:
    No cabin or climate control
    less comfortable sleeping space

    Off Road Camper -
    PROS:
    Enclosed cabin /w climate control
    Better sleeping space (mattress)
More amenities "out of the box" (fans, showers, lights, rear kitchen and etc.) with easy campground hookups
Goes lots of places (just not as many as a trailer)
    CONS:
    more expensive
    heavier weight
    goes less places than OLT
    less upgradable

Then brands come into question. I'm not sure which brands to trust and which to stay away from.

I'm torn between the low cost, go anywhere ruggedness of a Smittybilt Scout type trailer and the nice climate controlled cabin of something like a ModBug Little Buggy. Trailer keeps winning on every account in my head other than cabin, climate and comfort....but those are HUGE important points) I'm camper ignorant. Please help.
