Overlanding: SUV vs. Pickup

I know there are guys out there that use full size trucks for overlanding, etc., but I know I wouldn't feel comfortable doing so. My wife has an '07 Dodge Ram (which is a relatively small full size truck) and I wouldn't feel comfortable on certain trails with it. Hell, sometimes my Tacoma feels a little too big.

I suppose if the trails weren't too techincal or too narrow... The extra cargo capacity would be nice.

 

The other reason to go for SUV over truck is for bear country, which calls for a hard shell. You can get a top for the back of the truck, but they don't breathe very well with the windows closed (which gives you condensation) and they don't provide as much insulation.

An FJC with a rooftop tent isnt that great, they get really tippy. You can do it for non-technical ventures, but you can find cheaper options. They are Toyota's version of a Jeep, and just like a Jeep, you wouldn't expect to sleep in it comfortably.

I don't see an SUV providing much more protection from bears. Have you ever seen what those things can do to a vehicle? They can bend the freakin' doors in half!

No problem. I really enjoy reading the builds and peoples expeditions over there.

 

The day I got my Tacoma - I also test drove a FJC... I honestly felt much more comfortable in the Tacoma... So that's what I got.

 

Overlanding rigs add a lot of weight. I think you have to look at the available surplus of weight you could add to each and see what the difference is. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but I think the Tacoma would have a better surplus than the SUV due to less glass and body weight.

Simply put, you can add a lot more gear to the Tacoma. Everything else is just preference.
