First I just want to say, there are a lot of mixed reviews of the '16's here, but I love my truck, it's hands down the best Tacoma I've ever owned (it's my 3rd) and it's been a fantastic car for my first 5k miles. Zero issues, got the MT so none of that AT headaches and 22mpg in mixed driving.

Anyway, I picked up my new Tacoma in some pretty inclement weather, so I didn't give the paint the normal detailed once-over I would have liked to before I left the dealer lot. I was then in the process of moving and didn't get around to a hand wash for over a month, as I was living in a hotel at the time I bought it before I closed on my house.

The first time I did a detailed hand wash on the car, I noticed two types of overspray on my front end - what looks like hazy clearcoat up on the hood/fender, and some blazing blue pearl overspray on the bumper and headlight. It's strange because the BBP is not a mist, it's more like little droplets. The clearcoat is more of a mist, and I wasn't able to get it off with a clay bar and wax job.

Got me thinking about what I'd read on the MGM door color threads, that they sometimes do paint work on trucks or rail cars when cars are damaged. Everything on mine looks square and I can't find any evidence of a repaint, I'm assuming it was a BBP truck that was damaged and repainted close to mine but I'm going to see what the dealer says when I bring this in for my first oil change. Anyone else seen anything like this on their trucks? It's not possible that I could have BBP overspray on top of my clearcoat directly from the factory, right?

That sounds like a dealership question.

However, a coat of BBP on top of a black truck would look cool. Not on top of the clear coat, though.

If you ever watch how a car is painted in a factory, it is not at all possible to get overspray--especially from a different color car/truck.

More than likely is you picked up that blue paint debris on the road, and has NOTHING to do with Toyota BBP paint.

The dealer may not be able to do much since you I assume it's been a few months since you took delivery.

Hey OP - you didn't buy your truck for the paint job right?? You should have gotten an MGM where you get a 2 tone paint job AND over spray! FTW

The blue paint looks like an exact match for BBP, I highly doubt it could be road debris though anything is possible. When you factor in the clearcoat overspray, there was something that went on next to the truck before I took delivery. Wish I'd been smarter about the walkaround when I picked it up, lesson learned.

I own a BBP truck, and those droplets doesn't really look like BBP to me. Does those droplets have metallic flakes in 'em?

Call the dealer first, they'll polish that shit off in no time.

Or don't, and get a clay bar and set aside 2 beers and an hour.

If your car traveled by rail it may have overspray from graffiti artists tagging your rail car??? :notsure:

Funny I literally told myself the same thing, I drank two beers while clay barring and then waxed after and no progress on either overspray. I'm sure the dealer will be able to get it off if they don't tell me sorry your truck has 5k miles on it, this is your fault.

I doubt it, you just spent 34k. Unless they're the shittiest dealer ever, they'll at minimum offer to remove it for a discounted rate than what they'd normally charge.

Not sure why you're convinced they'll tell you to fuck your hat when you haven't even given them a call about it.

You're not going to be able to get that off by hand. You need to buy a quality orbital polisher and some cutting compound.

Interesting I have a similar MGM overspray on my 15', but I've always assumed it was from one of my wife's arts and crafts projects and ignored it because it's not noticeable at 5 feet away.

Most likely the dealer damaged it and painted it at the dealership. It's fuzzy on whether the law requires them to disclose minor repairs. I'd calmly and firmly speak to the GM and ask for a copy of the repair order on what the did to the truck. If they refuse, your only option is to get an attorney. If it's in solid condition, it's probably not worth it.

Missing My Last Tacoma --- Had 11 Toyota trucks in the past and many other Toyota cars too.
    .
...^^^... I have had the overspray problems on several vehicles ... but it's been a long time.

I always ask the dealer IF ANY REPAIRS were made to the vehicle that they are aware of ... ANY.

Many times, small damages happen in transit (tie-down chain link dropped on hood was my problem once) and the local PDR guy is called in and he fixes the damage in the back of the dealership.

I see this happening a lot behind the used car section of ALL dealerships.

IMO, small damage was done to the vehicle and the local PDR tried to make it look new .... some PDR guys are good and some not so good.

Ask dealership, what is the damage amount that they have to disclose, then ask them if ANY damage was fixed on the vehicle.

Important to bring dealer & Toyota Corp. into this fast ... in case the paint discolors or peels and you won't be blamed.

i don't keep a vehicle long, but on a (IIRC) 1979 280 ZX, my hood was fixed & bubbled & started peeling around the hood scoop within 3 months.

Make dealer & Toyota Corp. aware of this problem ASAP verbally & in writing too.

PS ... The dark colors are very difficult for the PDR guy to fix too ... especially in the uncontrolled environment of a back parking lot.

I can guarantee you this is what happened. It wasn't over spray from the factory it wasn't from a rail car it was from the dealer. Dealerships higher mobile painters and body guys to touch up new vehicles when they are damaged sitting on the lot from hail, weather, other dumbass salesmen, ect... They normally set up their own tent or move the car to another side of the lot fix what ever body work it needs. However when space is limited or the guy painting the car is a POS and lazy they will paint in the open air and next to other new vehicles the wind catches it and it gets on the car you buy. The bad news for you is that you weren't able to catch it before delivery so its going to be hard to get them to fix it. I had my car at a Honda dealership having a recall done I stopped over a few days early to see if they had made any progress mobile paint guy was there three feet from my car spraying another vehicle wind was blowing it everywhere. I've seen him do it more than once since then. Needles to say they fixed my car and the overspray and I never went back.

To get that crap off your paint your probably going to need a DA Buffer and good 2 or 3 step polishing compound then wax it.

Yesterday was the first time I actually got to wash and detail my truck since getting it 2 months ago.

This morning, I'm leaving my house in my other work vehicle, glance over at the tacoma with the sun shining on it, and I shit you not I see a 3 or 4 inch oval just below the bed side decal of metallic paint. My truck is black.

It almost looked like glue from an old oval sticker that was there then removed, but there never was a sticker there. I got out and checked in out up close, and sure enough it was in the paint, not on top, and had an immense amount of multicolored metal flake in it.
Couldnt believe it. At a certain angle, the Oval glows it in the sun.
Very strange, dont understand how it could be there, be that shape, and what appears to be under the clear.
I was running a tad late so I didn't snap any photos. Will try to get some asap.
    Very weird.

Just got my TRD OR 4x4 DCSB MT (Texas Vin) about a month ago and did not notice at first but when in the sun or street lights, I could see overspray all over windshield and the whole truck. (mine is Black). The overspray seems metalic silver in color. Funny thing thou is while picking up some paint at my local Auto paint shop i happened to mention it to them and they said that the dealership just came in a week prior and bought them out of all their Nanoskin Scrubs because they had overspray on some of their vehicles. They must have tried to remove it some but they were'nt even close. I wondered why when I picked up my truck there was a film on it that was similar to the ones used with Nano scrubs. I could have taken it back and have it resolved but I decided I could do a better job at paint correction since I have all the tools and compounds. Overspray is gone and my Black looks like it should, Wet and Sexy $.02
