These power gains aren’t that great, it’s not like we’re talking about 600 HP here. Not sure officially what the specs will be of this kit. If it’s only 75 HP more that would surely be a disappointment. The Lexus 3.5 TT is rated at 416. That’s with cats and being carb compliant, which are also restricting. Honestly for an aftermarket twin turbo setup, I would expect a lot higher gains than an OEM setup. To me this just doesn’t seem like the motor I would want a twin turbo set up on. It’s Otto/Atkinson cycle, and while it will probably only be running in Otto with the turbo to me there just are too many reliability concerns and limitations. I think I would be more comfortable with a super charger, especially given that most people here who want one claim they do a lot of off-roading. That’s one of the few advantages Tacoma has over the f150 because of its size. But look how many raptor fans were pissed when they dropped the 6.2 for the Ecoboost HO. The main reason being the reliability. Turbos aren’t something necessarily something you want for extreme off-roading.

I can understand why it brings excitement. This gen Tacoma leave a lot to be desired. A lot of people are disappointed in the performance of it. People can argue that fact but the 3rd gen section on here proves it. While I don’t think it’s a terrible truck I can tell you it’s not nearly as enjoyable as the first gen I had. Maybe it’s just me not being a young kid anymore or coming out of the F150. Who wouldn’t have more excitement with a twin turbo setup? As long as it was reliable and wasn’t an everyday problem it would be awesome to have more power and listen to turbos spool again.

I'm interested in how one plans to get around TRAC and VSC entirely. True posi swaps? I honestly can't wait to see the outcome, and some quarter mile passes. I'm sure these kits would be most beneficial for those with extra meat on the wheels.

Sounds like you need to go trade your Tacoma in on a Ferd and get out of this thread. We have no idea what kind of power the TT kit will make, so its pretty dumb to express disappointment when facts are completely unknown.

Put this into perspective... 400+ hp in our trucks is life changing. When you take into account power/torque gains vs. curb weight this is creating essentially a new truck.

The Tacoma is not a race car or a monster truck so becoming a screaming eagle isn’t quite what any of us are expecting nor is that what OVTune is advertising this upgrade as.

As far as reliability... You should be addressing OVTune with those statements and speculations on your part. This way he can make sure that people aren’t hearing third hand from a member such as yourself or an uneducated guess from me.

I think it’s been proven through and through that the Tacoma is a more dominant product across the board when you take into account durability, reliability, and cost of ownership.

There are plenty of other options out there that are faster and more powerful, but we love Tacos because frankly... We love Tacos. Oh and this is a Tacoma forum. Lol.

In case anyone was wondering, the main turbo option that mat is working with is rated for 100-200 hp for just one turbo, imagine 2

Those 13T’s should spool up quick too. Probably close to what the LC500 produces in torque (442 lbs/ft @ 1600 rpm and 416hp) and likely more hp as Mat has stated that the base kit will have more than 350whp. I just wonder how big of an effect the LC500 3.5’s longer stroke has on the low rpm torque when compared to the Tacoma 3.5’s bigger bore. The bigger bore should equate to more hp and less low rpm torque.

Can a LC500 crank be fitted to a 2GR-FKS with custom rods?!

Longer stroke greatly decreases turbo spool up time. So an engine with shorter stroke will need smaller turbos in order to achieve similar boost levels at low RPMs.

I’m just saying that it’ll be interesting to see where peak TQ will be achieved with the base turbo kit on this engine compared to the LC500.

Can you imagine being able to use the V35A-FTS crankshaft though? If possible that would equate to nearly 4.2L

I don't think a longer stroke could be done, the tacomas engine was designed for this truck only so it might not have the length in the cylinders for a longer stroke

Mat said there are gonna be 3 different turbo options. So I would guesstimate that you could choose the combo you want to achieve peak torque/HP where you want or have a low (1500 rpm) peak with a flat torque curve.

Peak torque at 1500 rpm sounds fantastic. I can’t wait to see the dyno results.

While it’s possible that you may be right about the inability to increase the stroke on the 2GR-FKS, this engine is used in many other vehicles.

I’m not trying to derail this thread, but Mat has mentioned custom connecting rods so I feel that discussion about changing the stroke (if possible) is relevant. Does anyone know if there’s any relationship between the V35A and the 2GR? It’s fun to speculate until we get hard facts from @OVTune

The modified version 13Ts will independently support over 200hp (individually). Then there is the 19T Hybrid (20T ETT compressor). This willl support 300+ (individually). Take all things into account and don't just look at a turbos size when thinking power. Pressure, engine efficiency, cylinder head flow, etc all come as a factor.

I'll give you an example, the VR30 uses twin GT20s.. individually these turbos can support a "quoted" 225hp. Yet these cars are doing nearly 500 WHP with two of them.

Another example is the infamous ecoboost 3.5. Probably the smallest turbos I've ever seen.
Yet a 3.5L Ecoboost can do nearly 400whp with tuning. Yet individually these turbos are too small for a lawn mower.

Many things have to be taken into account when trying to figure power ratings with boost.

Perfect example, the 2GR-FSE engine, same family engine, compression is pretty close to this one, and yet with a measly 7psi on a supercharger it does 400whp+.

In case anyone was wondering just how small 3.5 ecoboost turbos are.

You need a test vehicle which operates daily at a mile high elevation and is frequently used for towing over mountain passes up to elevations of 11,000 plus feet. Contact me.
