Been years since I seen that video, but yeah, not exactly a fair comparison though when they went with a larger single then turned it down, less heat output etc so twins wouldn't match it for power anyway. But on a inline engine a single makes way more sense to run with. Unless it's a diesel then compounds all day long.

Small twin turbos would be great for the 3.5L torqueless wonder of the 3rd gen Tacoma. Small turbos spool fast and create torque very quickly, and that's what this engine needs. Small turbos = torque down low. Just look at the Ecoboost F150, and drive one to see how torquey it feels. With a properly sized single ball bearing turbo, the Tacoma should perform well in the low RPMs where it needs loads of help. But if power doesn't come on until 3000 RPMs, then it is a complete waste. This engine makes good power above 3500RPMs the way it is. Below that is where it needs all the help it can possibly get.

I agree, I'm really curious what the dyno sheet will look like, can't wait for the low end torque pickup over N/A!!!!

If the space where the battery currently is could be useful, Off-Grid makes a great solution for moving the battery to the other side. The second half of their two battery set up.

Yeah I meant moving it out entirely
It fits behind the back seat just fine
And you can relocate the fuse box too
And with twins you’re gonna want a new air intake
So why not upgrade to a UMP filter setup and move it where there is more room

Many manufactures put batteries in the trunk (inside the car), but this is not feasible for the tacoma for a handful of reasons. Even relocating the battery under the hood, albeit much more practical, is one more added expense to the production kit. Keeping it simple is going to key for a successful production run that is reliable, and also affordable. There won't be any problems finding torque down low with the turbos Mat has suggested he will be using.

I just don’t feel it would be safe for a car battery to be in the passenger compartment. I’ve seen some go up in flames before

Putting a turbo up high near the air box location adds a lot of hot piping, down pipes an charge pipes, not a real feasible spot, closer to the engine the better. Least for twins

Completely agree. Smaller Twin snails would spool quicker to produce low end torque & be optimal. However, newer single turbos can still produce a fair amount of low end torque, especially when tuned correctly. The obvious advantage of single turbo kit is less cost, more simplicity, and therefore potentially more reliability??...especially important for a large portion of the TW crowd who do a fair amount of off roading. Furthermore, if some of us are debating about installing this kit ourselves, I think the single turbo kit becomes even more attractive, especially if having 2 turbos means a lot of modifications. I personally think a single turbo kit makes more & more sense when you start considering the circumstances of the build. If this kit produces 400+ HP/400+ torque, the truck will drive dramatically different compared to stock.

Matt, any word regarding getting Toyota Motor Corp eventually on board with this kit in terms of not voiding of warranty if installed by professionals, etc? My truck is plagued by the TSS sensor malfunctions and likely will be a visiting the dealer often one the next 2 years since my dash looks like airport runway strip. Luckily, the truck runs like dream and I refuse to remove the OVTune which the dealer hasn't disapproved.

This I was wondering about too. Seems like packaging is going to be really tough. I'm curious to see what OVT comes up with.

You may as well unsubscribe now... You don't get good, complete turbo kits for under $2k. I'd guess $4-6k.

We have a few 2012 EcoBoost F150's as tow vehicles at work. I begged my boss not to buy them back then. Full size truck with a 3.5 v6 and turbos? I told him they'd be weak down low where we need torque and eventually cost us a lot of money. I argued strongly for the V8. Well, I was wrong. Those trucks pull HARD. They've also held together without any issues. I'm sold on turbos. If there is ANY way that one of these kits could pass California emissions, I'll be buying one.

First turbo car I drove was my 4bt diesel with compounds, I am addicted to a properly sized and setup turbo vehicle now! Nothing like it!
