No this isn’t one of “those” oil threads….

Saw this at wallymart getting my oil jug for a change yesterday:

Anybody else go to the wall of Mobil 1 at wally with the extended performance, high mileage, advanced fuel economy, truck, and now hybrid, all the same weight, and have this cross your mind?

Every oil thread is one of “those” oil threads and if it’s not…it will be soon.

I feel the same way. Last time I bought the high mileage, since it was the only 0w-20 they had.

It's possible there are slight variations or additives to the different types, but I'm sure they are primarily the same oil.

Business-wise, it would be foolish (costly) for them to make a million different types of the same oil. More likely, it is mostly marketing differences, not substantive differences.

Unless you have an older vehicle with over 75k miles, it's best to stay away from oils that are blended for high mileage. They have different additive packages that affect the life of engine seals.
The toyota dealer used mobil1 extended in my truck during toyota care...I've continued to use it.

I run Castrol full synthetic with the titanium. I swear my engine runs smoother and is quite. Did my break in oil change at 3k miles

How it was explained to me many years ago by a world class tribologist...
"Like adding a small amount of Kool aid to water. In that tiny amount of powder, it can be red or blue or purple, it can taste like grapes or strawberry or blueberry, it can be tangy or sweet, all from a small package."
So yes, same base stock of oil, multitudes of additive packages that contain anti wear, anti foam, etc.

My VW's that I ran the Edge 0w40 with titanium in it did seem to "like it" so you aren't entirely wrong.

I wonder what the titanium is for in oil....as it sure can have strange reactions with other elements.

Titanium oxide is a high pressure additive, similar to zinc compounds that have mostly been eliminated from oils

Zinc is death to catalytic converters. Pretty sure it's eliminated in our oils we use in these newer vehicles today. Best hope this titanium oxide doesn't have the same reactions to the cats as zinc. Btw, one can still buy zinc additives for their older engines, or add it to break in new older ones. I've use it after rebuilding old tractor engines adding it to the oil.

I’d this Castrol knows what they are doing. They are of the leading huge oil companies owned by BP
