Anybody know if the power brakes are affected? What about a long uphill pull then needing the brakes?

You can add a simple 3/8" inline one way valve. Your master cylinder already has one to hold vacuum already, but you can add another to protect the stock one if you plan to add more boost. When you shut your car off you get about 3 pumps out of your brake pedal before it goes flat.

Of course it's a knock off. Did you expect a genuine garret or something? Also they are manufactured in the UK so that's 179 pounds. Which is roughly 230 USD.

I'm taking it in to get balanced and get bearings and seals replaced with garret components today.

Their website shows $185 US...exchange rate is really good these days. I don't have much experience with turbos or forced induction. So you get a chinese made turbo...replacing the bearings and seals and getting balance costs how much? So is that 99% as good as a US made turbo after this is done?

And another thing just hypothetical question...if I had a turbo, would it make sense to use the stock 3.31 diff...the turbo will have more torque so can save on MPG versus I upgraded to 3.73 and notice a drop in MPG even though I got larger tires 28.6" from stock 26.85". Or would you still want the 3.73" gears. You have prerunner so you probably have 4.11"

Oh yes you're right. I was incorrect on price. But to get all that done parts and labor by a turbo shop I was quoted 175.

So for $400 (parts and balanced) vs $1000 turbo...what's the trade off? My coworker has chinese turbos...he tunes his own audi S4... haven't hear anything bad about it. Only thing I can think of is if the metal is crap and breaks off and blows up the turbo and engine if bits fall into the engine.

Well I guess so. I mean I've read around and the only people who had problems are the ones who tried to run way too much boost or didn't replace the internals, bearings, seals etc of the turbo. Everyone who has done that doesn't seem to have a complaint.

Oh no. I knew it wouldn't be. I just typed that to be redundant, as well as point out to Joe Shmo, who stumbles across this thread, that that turbo is junk, without doing upgrades to it. There are many reasons why they are so cheap. Machining practices, tolerances, and material qualities and strengths. When Chinese turbos fail, their casings don't contain the projectile components well.

All that being said, this is why you, others, and @KirkRio upgrade the internals. Which is by far a much cheaper alternative than a true Garrett. Let me state this, cheap as it may be, I myself, do not support knock-offs because it continues a market for knock-offs.
