    Hey all,
My daughter bought a 3rd gen, 4cyl ext cab recently and the previous owner was a major smoker. We live in PA and I'm thinking the guy smoked with the windows up regularly because the smoke smell is pretty thick.
We had it detailed once and the detailer said he ran an ozone machine but I get the feeling that he might have just said he did because I did not notice a difference in smell at all.
I was half tempted to just replace the headliner but since the truck is relatively new, they are not cheap.
So, I took a leap and bought an ozone generator "pictured" and tomorrow im going to give it a go.
I'm also reading that an enzyme urine cleaner might work as well. I'm finding conflicting info on windows up/down/cracked and for how long.
If anyone has first hand knowledge on getting rid of unwanted smells, please let me know.
I also bought a can of the ozone deodorizer as well but I'll save that for afterwards as the ozone generator is supposed to be pretty good.
    Thanks for reading.

What did the detailer do exactly? Did they shampoo the seats?

Smoke dust gets everywhere. I'd pull the seats, have them shampooed, then the floor, then the headliner, and I'd also pull the console and vacuum the dust underneath.

I have an ozone generator about that size and I was very pleased with the results both in a car (windows up) and in a previously mouse infested house. (room by room)

My local auto parts place swears by "Air Sponge". I bought one but didn't try it on a car something died in... sold the car instead. ( dead thing hadn't dried out so smell kept coming back)

I have an ENERZEN model that's a few years old and a near twin to the one pictured.
    Probably the same manufacturer.
For a small unit, it works well.

Many years ago, I was involved in insurance restorations.
Smoke smell is very difficult to get rid of.
My company had a dedicated ozone room for treating furniture.
(I was not directly involved in that end of the business).

Run it in the truck, windows up, at max timer setting and leave it closed overnight.
You'll probably want to repeat the process a few times, and even then the smell will not be completely neutralized.

Air the truck out completely after a treatment.
Seriously, you don't want to breathe in ozone.
It'll burn your sinuses and lungs.

    Good luck.

I believe they shampooed the seats and floor and he made an attempt on the headliner. It was so bad, there is like a discolored stain left over from the steam. He said he made several passes but the staining just wouldn't stop.
The truck was never nasty or dirty, just smelled of smoke. It's a 2019 and has no damage.
    I should pull the headliner.

This seriously did the trick? Dang, I'll look into it and see if it's something I'll try. I definitely going to give the ozone thing a try first and of the results suck, then I'll move into the next.

Interesting, I've never even heard of that, I'll give it a look. Thanks for the info

Sweet, I was looking for some more detailed info on process. This thing has a 2 hr timer. I'll try the method you mention and see what i get. I figured it's going to be a bit$h to get the smell out.
I'll run this thing tomorrow and I'll report my results.

Yep...I left it closed up for about 24 hours, and also ran the front and rear AC before final ventilation. UV breaks chlorine down with a quickness, so it needs to be done in the garage, or at least completely out of the sun.

Heed this caution, ozone is highly irritating to eyes and respiratory system.

I've been reading about it, appreciate the caution. Do you know from experience? Anything you would recommend to make this process a little easier?

I had good luck with a generator in a smoked in Subaru - it did take a few rounds before it seemed like it was done for good.

They weren't legal in CA but I did find some shady hole in the wall operation in Vegas that sent me this grade school science project looking electrical death trap. But that aside, now, the only way you can tell is when you pop an interior panel off on the drivers side and there's ash all along the seams..

Get a small upholstery cleaner they can be had for about $100.
The Bissell Little Green Machine is probably the best for the money.
Use Odoban in it with hot water and clean the headliner really well.
Then do your machine 3 or 4 times.
Put a small fan in the car it seems to help.
Just alternate between the vacuum and the generator.
I had the same problem and about 3 rounds of each and the smell was completely gone.

Run the ozone machine and let it vent with the windows down for several hours after. Then use ozium spray and change the cabin air filter. Charcoal and baking soda work well for absorbing orders too.

I have the same machine that I use on my hunting clothes. It works for my needs. I let my buddy use it on his Silverado that had water stained carpets from a creek that flooded. Worked for him as well. Cycle it on and run it a few times over the weekend, shouldn’t hurt anything.

I had smoked in my truck with windows down for a few years and recently quit. I wanted to clean mine up and make it smell better. what I did was a very through vacuum. I got under the seats as best as possible. cleaned all the plastic with Maguire's interior cleaner, cleaned all the glass. Put a arm and hammer fridge pack under the seat. for a while. I also took out the cabin air filter and used this product https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00G49DUYY?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title
that is supposed to refresh the interior by circulating through the AC system on recirculate. You just put it in the middle and set it off like a bug bomb. then I put in a new filter.

I would suggest changing the cabin filter if you have not yet and with the Ozone thing be careful not to use it too long as it can over time damage plastics. Ozone is a good way to remove odors but use it a few hours at a time don't run it overnight.

I do. I actually have 2 experiences with Ozone and this situation.

1- my wife once bought a car that was previously a smokers car. We instantly installed a new cabin air filter and I ran an ozone machine in the car over night with the windows cracked just a hair. I let it air out most of the next day. Every window down and just let it do its thing. We can’t say we were pleased with the results. It toned down the smoke smell 90% but it was still very much there. In addition to that, the ozone smell was very present. And while it’s somewhat of a pleasant smell and kinda refreshing and clean type of smell, it never weakened or went away, it was odd. So that was almost as aggravating as the original cig smell.

2- I have some rental property and I run my ozone machine in the houses between “turns” in the property… one time I was at a rental. (Turns out this one in particular was the furtherest away from my house.) I was doing some minor repairs. Go to leave for the night and I was going to run the machine while I was gone, I swore I turned the machine on the 12 hr setting, giving it about 1-2 hrs to be off before I returned… evidently I turned it on 24/7 mode and the thing was still running when I returned. Given the drive time I’m like, “heck with this, I’m just gonna go to the farthest point in the house from where the machine was and piddle around until the stuff dies down.” The entire rest of the day my lungs felt like they were on fire and the coughing wouldn’t stop. That stuff is very potent.

Dont let it scare you off, but definitely use common sense

Not only is ozone bad to breath in, it slowly attacks softer materials. Foam, fabric, plastic, in that order. Use with caution.
