The timing marks are on the phaser.
If it's stuck, it will cause issues.
Even more when you "retime" it.

I've seen phasers fail on the 1GR. You can usually physically see it.

For clarification can you tell us which side is bank 1 and 2? We gotta ask the stupid questions.

Next @TnShooter or @Dm93 there's a "techtip" for p0022 where you check the cam journal if you can share it. It's not likely but its good to see all data.

I always claim timing chains on here and this sounds like it, maybe a photo of the chain tensioner through the port would be a good reference. The stumbling doesnt add up to chain though.

Bank 1 is passenger side and Bank 2 is driver side of course.
Would love to see any tech tips that you might have.
We can snap a photo of the tensioner tomorrow evening and post it. Here are some photos I have on hand in the meantime

    Dang. I see it.

the removable cam bearing gets installed incorrectly and causes this code. It’s the just of it it. A photo of said bearing might be enough.

Cam bearing as in cam cap? Which one can be installed wrong? They’re installed in numeric order and all markings face the correct direction.
I’m planning to verify oil moves through the OCV and into the passages in the cam.

I’ll remove the #1 Cam cap and crank the engine with the OCV installed unpowered and verify it has good pressure coming through the oil passage in the cam cap.
Then repeat with the OCV powered with 12v from the battery to verify it comes out the other passage.
Thanks to @Dm93 for the idea. I wouldn’t have thought to try this without you.

    This seems plausible.

Did they give the clearance spec?

I haven't persued it any further but it looks to me like that bearing can be installed improperly and block the oil holes.

There is no bearing. While we were in there we decided to check the clearance and it looks to be in spec. It was between .002 and .0015

It looks like the bearing is in bank 1 intake cam only. Not bank 2.

Here is a link to a video of us testing the ocv. Look like oil is not making it through the ocv on bank 2 when it’s on, even though it actuates and will stall the engine in bank 1.
Seems like a weird niche failure.
Ordering the parts tomorrow. Will report back if new ocv fixes the problem.
