    Hi,

I am getting a check engine light and I checked it with my Autel engine analyzer. Its is telling me "P0022 - a camshaft position timing over-retarded bank 2". I have a Haynes Techbook on OBD - II and all it is telling me is where the sensors are and how to replace them. Has anyone had this code come up on their Tacoma? Is it safe to drive the truck with this engine light on? What is the solution to this problem? Thanks for any information !

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
    Welcome to TW

Check your VCT solenoid for dirt. This code indicates the valve maybe stuck open. Give it a good cleaning and bench test it if you can (not sure the procedure on that). Reset the code and see if it comes back. Bank 2 is the side of the motor with the #2 cylinder.

It's ok to drive with the code on as long as your engine isn't stalling or rough idling. This code may also cause poor mpg's.

This code indicates that the pcm is commanding the camshaft timing to move but it is not seeing the change it expects to see. First and foremost, check oil level and quality.. If ok, swap vct/spool valve from bank to bank. If code follows valve to the other bank then it is the problem. If vct is ok you may have a stuck actuator assembly (part of camshaft sprocket) which is a big job (chains, guides, sprockets, etc)

Honestly, 95% of the time I see variable valve timing codes on any car (Japanese, domestic, German, etc) they get resolved with fresh oil and filter ( correct weight, good quality filter). Simply changing the oil and filter is a good first step. Then clear the codes and test drive.. go to step 2 only if/when you have to.. good luck!
