P0171 is most commonly caused by vacuum leaks...probably best to look for one before taking the time to replace the fuel pump (regarding the posts above about cleaning the MAF and then deciding to do the fuel pump).

I fought this code for awhile too and it ended up being a small vacuum leak

bingo...had the same issue on my 99 taco. Did two easy things:
    1) clean MAF sensor (K&N filter causing contamination)
    2) replace a bunch of rotted, leaking vacuum hoses

knock on wood, no more CEL popping up yet

Aside from the code, how was it running? I suspect my fuel pump is not long for this world. If I have to go through the BS of trying to test it, I will just change it. Was it running crappy?

I am having the same CEL issue but mine is only at an idle. My Oring/gasket around the MAF sensor is also very cracked. I will start here. Hope its this easy. LOL
    Thanks for the insight

How do I check the fuel pressure at the rail and what should it be?

Thanks for posting this information as well as the things you ran through. It helped me diagnose my 2006 Tacoma 4.0L with 125,000 miles.

Same faults and verified that I had no external air leaks. Cleaned MAF and verified readings. Saw that I would get a value of 35 on my Long Tern Fuel trim bank 2 on the scan gauge when accelerating. Found fuel pressure below 41PSI.

Replaced fuel pump from rock auto as well. Used the Denso repair kit for about $110 and installed a new fuel pump unit o-ring. I had a Toyota tech teach me to move the front of the tank downward and use the ring tool to remove the pump. If you use the repair kit, don't forget the small o-ring to the fuel filter unit.

My truck had a P1135 code when I purchased it. Severe lack of power and running rich. I replaced PCV value, A/F ratio sensor(bank 1 Sensor 1), and cleaned my air intake system. Truck ran significantly better but then popped a P0171 code maybe 30 miles afterward. I simply pulled out my MAF sensor and cleaned the harness and sensor and boom, code went away and not issues since.
