Stealerships love it when you take your car in after the mice get a hold of it. At the Ford dealership where I worked the mice loved Fusions, F150s and Explorers with all the silicone /soy-based wiring they use today in new cars.
Even though the wiring can be repaired in the damaged area dealerships will usually tell you it all needs to be replaced and hit you with a huge repair bill. During the winter months they had at least 1 car every week coming in with chewed wires. Mice loved Fords foam engine covers to. Even though I have never seen any mice in my garage I still keep a couple traps for them if they do. It's not just mice. Chipmunks and Squirrels get up under the hood as well. I decapitated a squirrel last fall when I started up my Tacoma.

I got the knock sensor code after my truck was parked in the mountains for ~2 weeks. I was horrified to find a packrat had nested in near the engine. I was even more horrified to learn of the 20+ hours to do the wiring harness, as is necessary to access on 2nd gen Tacomas. Lucky that comprehensive ins. covered it.
