Interesting turn of events. I reset the code (probably 4-5th time doing so since charcoal canister was replaced) and the wife drove it around with the dogs to get them groomed. 60 miles later, CEL never came back on. I drove it straight to the local guy to get inspected and it passed. CEL hasn’t come back on and I haven’t done anything to it for it to have changed. I’ll take it though .

Jeez. 1800 to replace that crap is wow. I figure it's worth the $ considering the time and effort, if you certainly have the funds

im not rich.. i wanted a truck and heres my story.. i bought this truck off a used car lot run by scammers and theives.. i didnt know this till months later.. so i paid cash for this truck thats 100 dollar bills ever see almost 10 grand in cash its amazing
anyway i walk in buy it forgetting to check the smog certification.. and when i paid for it on the sale slip and they gave me the car fax etc.. after i walked out i forgot i didnt ask about the smog papers.. so i find out that they bought the truck off a auction site the auction site smogged it.. then they claimed they dont ever have to smog anything.. so it sits for a year mind you with a check engine light that they cleared every time it came on so you or i come in not knowing it was always throwing codes... so i test drive it its fine the other stuff etc..
get it home light comes on i diag it etc.. turns out it had leaks in all the major hoses from the tank the acordian hose to the roll over valve and the hoses to the charcol canister.. so i call them back they scammed me i paid to have it smogged it sat for a year they claimed now we dont but every 3 months it sits no matter business etc they do.. they told me to pound sand.. of course they are still in business and tried other scams with toyota like warranty work i find out toyota kicked them out told them no because i went to the same dealer they did... ohh we know that guy and he laughed i asked and got told..

so basically i had to smog it 3-=4 times.. first time when i had to make sure the repair was done right then to transfer title.. then i got a bi anaul the same year 5 months later so 3 times dmv said oh well

so 58 dollars times 4 times with the one i paid when i bought it plus labor to repair the smog stuff the tech didnt know crap so i had to tell them what to do.. then second time in i said i want a master lead tech to work on it not some low level 1 year guy they lied turnes out he worked on it again so i said just replace all hoses replace the roll over vlave replace the canister etc etc and there you go.. oh do you want us to smog it too yea sure sites for 2 days whats going on oh the smog machine is broken lol no its not you just fucked up on my truck again and are covering your asses.. so with that said i pulled out looked it over myself mind you i have 25 years as a 3 ase tech for a dealer not toyota but i know my shit.. i had to have a dealer repair it because legal if i touched it it dont count if i had to sue etc...

so tahts the story... and turns out no services were done trans service power steering brakes..
so i did my self the trans service dropped pan etc coolant new plugs new brakes all around new alternator new battery pretty much every single thing on the truck is new except the radiator and hoses those are next

so with that saidi dumped about 2 grand of my own money and im still within the price of the truck the value of it.. yes i got hosesd... i knew i would have to dump some money into it off the start to bring it up to my standards and to show it some love.. i baby my stuff.. and now it looks new inside looks new engine looks new has new parts its a good truck.. little things like lights ive had to buy etc. but all in all its up to standards that toyota would resell it for all parts are from the dealer.. i dont like buying stuff from indipendant parts shops and i mean its a great truck in fact im working on it now installing a good alarm installed a cool little radio just wanted to.. converted to electric fan more hp and it helps k$n filter but thats about it.. no speakers or anything like that im too old for that stuff anymore.. so with that all said it can go another decade and still be usefull

what i didnt count on was the smog stuff and being scammed like that.. and what pisses me off is they knew it didnt care. broke the law and still in business... so be careful people buying used.. for the price i hav into this about 12 grand i could of for another 3 bought a new car be it a enttry level car.. but insurance would be high etc i have full coverage on my truck and i pay 400 a year so im happy now served me well once you get the kinks out..

turns out i found a cross jesus cross in the back seat and a old sticker was on the window those 2000's year stickers you know faith stickers not of this world you can see the outline when i wash it.. so someone was looking out for me..

Wow what a story. Don’t worry though. Those scammers will get what’s coming to them. They’re playing with fire alright.

sounds like you’ve got your truck back to being in good shape though. Now it should be smooth sailing without having to worry about any major repairs. Just regular maintenance. But man oh man. That stuff you went through sounds like a nightmare scenario to me.

well 2 years on and nothing major crosses fingers i probably should do the radiator and hoses etc 124k miles all original.. so thats on my list now water pump maybe while im at it.. but other than that.. i hope the tranny holds engine dont blow up you know the major stuff i drive slow grandma slow dont haul so should last me a long time.. yea sad thing though is they are still in business.. like i said they tried to scam toyota they sell hybrid cars too the battery packs tried to get them under warranty keep bringing them in you know 5 10 a day etc finally they said go away.. i didnt learn about their practices till after.. you hear little bits here and there from other people etc... they are a llc though so they can go belly up and it wont affect them personally i really hate that.. you go llc and i didnt know this but if you sue them and they sell off their stuff or dont have any money in the bank they are not personally responsible what they will do is just open another business with another name... turns out i found out thats what they did 1 year after i found out they owned another business and probably ran the scam aka smog scam etc then they changed names and just keep doing it and doing it and doing it...

i should have never gone there but whats done is done..
ive learned alot about toyota from this if i had the money id have a new vehicle a new truck but sadly new trucks now basic ones are 25 grand so about 28 grand to 35 grand out the door with taxes.. no thanks then insurance would be 300 a month then the payments so 600 bucks a month no thanks id rather out right own it as it stands i own my truck free and clear insurance is 400 full coverage bumper to bumper yearly and the little stuff i can take care of.. so fingers crossed just last 10 years and well be good

I still have the codes lol. I did get a smoke test done and the leaks were in the gas-cap area. I’m thinking it’s something to do with the charcoal canister since I replaced the gasoline tube and hoses connecting to the gas tank, and have tried two different gas caps.

truck has always ran fine though.

So I got a smoke test today and the smoke was coming from this area

It's the exact same thing as in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTk3oSSgrnM

Looked at the charcoal canister and the fuel check valve and didn't see smoke there. Gas cap is good, and the filler neck is newish but aftermarket.

Really stumped on this one, as it may also be some different hose that needs replacing (Toyota 77404-04010), or the vsv near the canister

I finally decided to try this out and test all three of my vacuum switch valves. Let me tell you, those philips screws on the 2nd one and the one on the charcoal canister were such a pain. Tested them with a 9v battery, and it ended up being the second VSV in the engine bay that didn't make the clicking sound. Replaced it, and the all three codes are gone now. Thanks for this guide. This whole time I thought it was a leak near the gastank/canister area because of the smoke tests I had done. I had even replaced the filler neck and hoses.. to no avail.
