I'm taking it into a shop tomorrow that has worked on my truck before. I saw him yesterday, told him about the delayed shifting, he immediately said does your truck lunge forward when it engages? I said sure does and then he proceeded to say, "your transmission fluid is *probably* low". I'm glad to know what you are telling me is what he is also guessing.

He knows toyotas and lexus quite well and said it should only take him an hour or two. I'm not confident enough in my skills to start messing with the transmission

There are two possibilities for the lunging into drive range . The first possibility and most common is being low on fluid . Not sure what your mileage is now but Toyota changed their opinion on fluid changes from 100,000 down to 60,000 . If you had it done at 70k , you may want to flush again now depending on your mileage .

Second possibilty . PO705 remains in the emc as a hard code . The computer in your truck may still beleive there is an issue with your Park/ Neutral switch . The computer doesnt know what gear you are in and tries to compensate by raising the transmission pressure causing your lunging . Have you disconected your battery for 10 seconds and then road test ? usually the check engine light would be on if this were the issue but worth a try . Removing the battery terminal should allow your transmission to re-learn . Just a thought mind you:p

I'm around 90k now I believe. When my truck was in the shop getting work done on the cage, the battery was disconnected for a week or two and the CE light hasn't came on since. I'm going on around 350 miles now since that point and 2nd gear still seems to work.

Ok, so I got the truck back and he flushed the transmission fluid. He said it wasn't low, just dirty. Luckily he felt the delayed shift when he was bringing it into the shop. I'll see if the fluid change helped. My guess is the problem will still be there.

There is a bad connection with the truck . Not enough to trip the check engine light but enough to cause greif .All it takes is a little corrosion or a wire that was stretched at one time or another . At this point , we know the issue is hidden within the diagnostic flow chart for the P0705 code . Needle in a haystack trying to find the problem as they say .
I forgot to mention that if the truck was low on fluid , there is usually a delay to reverse as well .

Not sure if it has anything to do with the OP's 2L issue, but I read somewhere that, when shifting from P to D, the transmission actually momentarily starts out in 2nd, to reduce lurching. Maybe his is going directly to 1st because of the other issue.

I still have the delayed shift but the check engine and error code is gone. I get the delayed shift probably once a day..maybe more. When I feel it do that, I just put it back into park and then into D and it shifts fine.

I still get the delayed shifting into drive. It seems to be more frequent now. I am wondering if the contacts in the park neutral switch are bad. I could get a new one one ebay for about $110. I still haven't seen a CE light for a while now

I don't want to jinx myself, but I belive I resolved the problem by replacing the neutral safety switch. I've had the "new" one on the truck for 2 days now and it hasn't happened once whereas the delayed shift would happen a couple times a day.

I found a junkyard in Sacramento with a 2006 tacoma and had them pull the part for me. Cost me $90 including shipping. The dealership wanted about $250 for a new one.

For reference, this is the part I replaced:

Since it is riveted shut, I am going to cut the bad one open and investigate to see if I can see a problem. I'll try my best to cut the rivets to allow me to bolt it back together if I fix it.

There is a printed circuit board inside . One of the circuits will be trashed and black from water intrusion . I have taken many of them apart .

Every time you had a delayed shift , there should have been a soft code set in the ecm memory . Put the truck back in park and the ecm then knows whats going on . The park circuit is going to be fine when you get it apart as your truck started fine

I really want to see the inside of that switch. Those rivets should drill out pretty easy. They look like aluminum rivets.

    Subs.

Not the actual switch but this will give you an idea of what happens when the board circuits go for a crap . Why manufacturers ever put these type of controls under a vehcile is beyond me . Water finds a way in .

gear cruncher you were right. A lot of black gunk in there actually.

I have no idea what i am looking at, but do you think if I wiped all the grease out and put new dielectric grease in, this unit could still work?

Yikes , That board looks horrible . It,s hard to tell by the pictures but looks to me like some of the copper is missing in the park - neutral range . I wouldnt take the chance of trying to run it again . I suppose if you put it back together and try the resistance test to see if it passes ?
Dont remember if you had a multimeter , but the resistance values are listed at the bottom of this pdf

Yup, replacing that part I got from the junkyard fixed the problem. I have since sold that truck so no info on how it's held up

I need tips on how to get this switch off my tranny. I have the wiring harness off, the 12mm bolt off and the 22mm nut off. Been trying with 2 screw drivers to get it to pop off...no luck.
