Does anyone know if I am supposed to take out the plastic bolt that the metal bolt is attached too? This is a new NSS and will not go on the spindle that is on the tranny.NSS.gif NSS.gif

Did your new NSS have a plastic "bolt" that you had to take off in ordered to get it over the spindle on the tranny?

I was able to "fix" it with a new Neutral Safety Switch. The fix worked well for about 1000 miles but now its throwing t in e same code. I believe the switch is not on all the way like it should be (my mechanicless knowledge) so I have to get up under it to see what I can do to get it on there all the way.

Do you know if the NSS has to be flush against the transmission case in order to work properly?

I think its that rectangular metal thing that goes through it that actuates the switch so for it to be flush, I dont think it *has* to be, but when I put mine on, it sat pretty flush.

I replaced the NSS a couple of months ago and I am now having the same issues and the same code. (705)

    Looking for opinions..

Should I take apart the shifter to look for issues or should I look for a wiring harness that goes into the NSS?

If its not the NSS itself, could be the harness. That would def be the next place I check. I dont have much experience with electrical so I'm not sure how you'd test it. Maybe give the connectors a good cleaning

    Thanks!

Do you know the part number of the harness or what I would type to search for one?

Is the range sensor flush against the side of the trans? Yours looked pretty rusty, if it was hard to get the range sensor off the little ecentric shaft it may be hard to get it all the way on

Yes it was rusty and very hard to get on even after cleaning the shaft.

Do you think that because it's not flush that it could be throwing the code again? And causing the issues.

Yea, possibly. When the shaft turns the sensor has to turn with it to be accurate. The symptoms youre describing indicate that the range sensor is "out of adjustment". Some cars give you slots/room to adjust the sensor back and forth

    Ok thanks.

Do I just get under and turn it one way and drive it like that for a while to see how it turns out? Do I need to loosen it up to turn it or just force it a hair?

Im not sure if the range sensors we've got allow for adjustment, some of them are adjustable, some are fixed. Look for slots at each bolt that would allow it to rotate.

If the sensor was on there for a while twisted/bent it may be damaged again. In past ive really had to clean that shaft with a wire brush to get the rust off and get the sensor on without damaging it.

Adding for people that come here with this problem in the future. Check your trailer harness first. Had this issue and replaced the switch with no luck. Turns out I smashed the harness in a rock and bent 4 pins over on each other. Straightened the pins and I was good to go.
