Service guy said that it was a known problem for the Tundra and that my Tacoma was the 1st he had seen.

I know that it would be super helpful for myself and others who read this, but can you possibly check in with them and see what warranty it was covered under and what the exact diagnosis was, or even who you talked with? I can try calling. I would be forever grateful to you if you did.

Hang on just a second. Who is saying this is ONLY covered under California up to 80,000 miles?

Under federal law, ALL emissions controls on the powertrain regardless of manufacturer are covered until 80,000 miles regardless of the state you live in. That includes the catalytic converters, and yes that would include the air pump, as it is directly changing and affecting engine emissions actively.

If the dealer is hassling you about the air pump and you are under 80,000 miles, you may want to do some quick internet searching to pull up that information. Probably under ARB's (air resources board) website, if not make a few calls and see if they can direct you to a website or fax/ email you information which indicates so, then slap that in the service writers and/ or the service managers face and threaten legal action if they do not comply.

Call Dennis Holmes (service advisor) (713) 943-7780. He is the person that helped me. The parts that are listed on the invoice is what they replaced. You should be covered for it.

I'm sorry. I did forget to mention it's covered 8 years or 80,000 whichever comes first. Good on you. Get them in trouble. Those scam artists.

TOYOTA SAID IT "DEFINITELY SHOULD BE COVERED" If anyone would like to reference my case number, by all means. 1512221920. They said it should be covered under either power train and/or emissions.

How many poor people trying to make ends meet have been scammed into paying these fees. I just went off on some people! This is ridiculous. Why am I having to do their job, read forums, and do all the legwork!

It's because the turnover rate at some dealerships is REALLY high. When a service advisor is appreciated, they go out of their way to serve customers. They are also more likely to keep up on their knowledge base.

    It's not a Toyota issue. It's a dealership issue.

Toyota needs to be putting out a better product. If parts like t his are knowingly breaking on many trucks around the U.S. then a recall should be done. I mean, its not like its a cheap fix. We are talking several thousands!

I'm not too sure that is likely to happen. Every time I turn around, they appear to be closer in bed with GM than they were last time. We already know how bad of quality GM products are also you know?

Dealers play the stupid card because they are lazy, and on top of that they want extra money. It's all paid for even if it's under warranty by corporate, so it's not like they are any losing any money by taking on these warranty jobs so I don't understand what the problem is?!

Well like I mentioned. Getting a scary $2000 invoice might lead you to saying "F" it and buy new. If they get a few people a month to do that then it helps their numbers. One of them even mentioned to me, "why don't we just get you into a new one"

It's usually NOT a Toyota part problem, per se. It's the air pump manufacturer that had an issue during manufacturing and either failed to find it during QC or it failed. The issue with the Tundras was that water got through the seal and caused the pump to fail.

It happens and it is inconvenient.

Now that you have an answer, take a deep breath, get it repaired under warranty, and enjoy your truck for many years to come!

That's a terrible repair shop that told you that. Go somewhere else. Immediately.
