I'm in a similar situation as AMarkham40, but I'm almost dead set on P265/75/R16. I'd like P285 on 17" inch wheels, but practicality-wise I'll be better off with the 265s.

Quick question... this is the first time I'm going to be having to deal with very bad snow. How many miles do I have to put on the tires before I start seeing a detrimental effect on snow traction? By the way, I'll have to deal with both un-plowed road and plowed roads. I'm asking because while I want to put the tires on the truck right now, I'm wondering if I'm better off installing them closer to fall so they are fresh for winter. For me it's not a case of looks but of utility. I need to get to work.

These are not categorized as a winter tire per se, but rather a 4 season tire. The siping runs deep into the lugs to my understanding as does the silica enhanced compound. I would not hesitate to run them year round, but why not run what you have until winter if they still have decent tread

They also have a 55k tread warranty so Falken expects the, to last a while and wear well. I don't think you'll get a definitive answer until these tires have been out longer. No one has had them long enough to see how they handle winter with some wear.

But you could say I should still have great snow traction maybe up until after 24K miles perhaps?

Have you thought of getting a set of winter tires to use exclusively in winter?

^^^ That wouldn't work for me. Basically, I get snow and summer in the same day. I live in the mountains so I have to deal with snow... then as soon as I'm down, it's warm and dry.

These are looking more and more tempting. Yours were Standard Load P285 and not LT, right Hairy Taco? Can't beat that price...

Nice. Quick question. The P and LT versions basically look exactly the same, right?

I'm likely going to order 5 tires (265/75/R16). I'm looking under my truck and the previous owner had a 265/70/R16 that somewhat matches the current set on there... but it's old. I think I'll get a full set of 5. I would do the 5 tire rotation, but I'm buying wheels too and I'm not sure I want to buy another matching wheel for the spare.

The LT have deeper treads according to @Discount Tire Direct and Falken's website. I believe visually you don't really see a huge difference though. My P rated tires look plenty aggressive for me, even next to a C rated Duartrac.

@kiteboarder this section of the OP's post might interest you as well.

"Full-depth sipes and grooves maintain consistent performance and appearance throughout the life of the tire."

Don't know if that's true also for the P rated but maybe @Discount Tire Direct can chime in on this one.

Aren't these Falkens (P285) a little bit lighter than say, a bfg KO2. Even though they're both Load E?

Falken P285/70/17 is 50.5lbs, KO2 doesn't come in P rated in that size but the LT is 57.9 according to their websites.

Yeah i noticed that the 275 and 285 KO2 is still load range E, wish it was C. How much power loss and mpg difference would there really be between the C and E?

No experience with it personally, but many members have said its a noticeable decrease in power because of the extra weight. Also you have to do some trimming of the fender wells and most likely cut the cab mount off and have a flat piece welded in for extra clearance. To me it wasn't worth the hassle so I went with 265/70/17.
