Pad and rotor replacement on 2014 TRD Sport 4x4

The replacement kit came with cotter pins to hold the 2 pins that secure the brake pads into the rotor assembly. Only the installed ones on the truck run the length of the whole assembly with a hook that clips into the middle. Apparently to keep the pins that hold the pads from turning? My question is; Can I use the cotter pins or do I need to use what was already on the truck? I've seen both in the videos.

 

Which ever feels more secure. The factory clips can get weak. I usually bend the clips so they fit tighter

The inner pad clip that rests on top applies slight pressure just to help prevent squealing.

 

I believe you can use either. My old ones were in good shape so I reused them.

 

Since brakes seem pretty important, , belief and assume are 2 words I would like to avoid. Anyone know for certain? Not like working on my old 6volt VW Bus with an Idiots Guide, but the internet I must admit, is darn handy. Love ya all and thanks.

 

Both work fine. I prefer the OE style longer clip. The pins can turn, that doesn't matter. The OE clip is designed like it is simply so it doesn't fall out. The aftermarket clips keep the pins in, which is their only job, but they're easier to lose (small).

Well.... the originals were good enough for the Toyota engineers. And, I don't just play a Mechanical Engineer on TV, I am one.

 

Early 2nd gens used small individual clips, the facelifted 2nd gens got the larger full clips, just a manufacturing thing. Not engineering.

As long as whatever you put in there doesn't fall out, run with it. They just keep the pins from backing out / falling out.
