So my son's bike fell and hit the tailgate of my truck and caused a small dent and a paint chip. I'm more concerned about the chip as I don't want any rust to form. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fit it without taking it in to a shop? In terms of the depth, I can certainly feel it with with my finger tip and it slightly catches a a nail if I scratch at it. Anybody use Dr. ColorChip ... would that be recommended for a fix for this size of a paint chip? Any other suggestions?
    Thank you!!!

Dr. Color Chip all the way. I have used this for years. Best touch up paint and no blobs. Fills in the chip nicely and can't notice it until you get up close.

This may be obvious, but take the tailgate off and lay it flat when you fill the chip. Also, have you considered just dropping the tailgate off to a good PDR shop? That should not cost much to have the dent removed without any paint work.

Dr color chip . Just clean well, and lay your bumper flat . At least this way you can keep from rust.

If you have a minute over the weekend, taking off the inner plastic panel from the tailgate is pretty easy and will give you access to the backside of that tailgate panel. This should allow you to push out that dent - probably with just your hand.

Once the dent is out, painting the chip will be easier with the tailgate off the truck and flat on a table. It’ll give you more control over the paint, plus a cleaner environment to paint in.

If you need directions for removing the plastic inner tailgate panel, see if someone has posted the Toyota directions for the electric tailgate lock installation. Those tell you exactly how to remove and replace the panel (although it is pretty obvious).

PDR then Dr. Colorchip. I've had to look real close to find the touch ups i've done with DC in the past, it blends in pretty well. A few passes of "not enough" color is better than a once over of too much.

Meh.. look at it as a good memory.
Just like when my son (age 5) was throwing rocks into a canyon. He misjudged his release and hit my tailgate. Not just ounce, but twice. He will never be a pitcher for the dodgers.

Don't push it out yourself. Get a person guy to do it. You'll mess it up. Brush touch up from dealer is perfectly fine.
