So what's actually metallic about this color?

I'm looking to respray my chipped hood and certainly want to match colors. In looking at the original paint, I can see no indication that there is any metallic hue to it. It looks like basic gloss black to me.

The cost difference for a basic gloss black and a custom mixed 204 Metallic Black is significant. In addition, who knows what I will get if I opt for the custom mix. My interest is mainly to get rid of the ugly road rash on the front of the hood and not to achieve concours perfection.

If anyone has any insight into how I might ensure a fair match to original paint I'd appreciate hearing from you.

if it is polished Real Nice you can sorta see the speckles in sunlight at certain angles
that is what i suppose is the 'metallic' about it :notsure:

    how significant is this cost?

Thanks. Well I spent some time looking at the paint in areas like the inside door pillars and even with polishing, I'm not seeing any glimmer of metallic stuff. I even got out my Sherlock Holmes magnifying glass and couldn't discern it from any other gloss black. I'll take your word for it, but I'm just not seeing it. I reckon that I'll just go with the gloss black, but perhaps a matte black may be nice on the hood.

The custom paint would add a few hundred for a quart size over what I could buy generic gloss black for.

Well now you have me thinking...
I have never noticed in the door jams either any kind of metallic speckles
And honestly thinking it over a bit more carefully the only real noticeable metallic my truck has is on the one front fender and hood that were repainted a long time ago, almost 15 years now
I just polished the back door tailgate after putting a new handle in recently and did not notice any shiny speckles, at least to the degree i can see them on the hood and that front fender
Yet the color code on the VIN is 204
    So IDK lol

100% sure 1998 (and older) OE paint codes(all manufacturers) are not “valid” anymore
    Maybe up to 2003

    no biggie
Just need good painter to add color by weight and spray multiple swatches to fully match original color

Just had to do the exact same
Long Ahole police story but I backed into my friend’s $40k (motor only) 09 mustang leaving a car show

    Paid for both bumpers(5mph crash)
    His (thankfully) was black
My 1998 Acadia Green turned out great and color code was not available with new EPA regulations/new paint/new paint mix computers/etc…..had to be custom matched

The “metallic” y’all speak of is the 2nd stage of painting
    For a metallic black:
    1stage-black base coat
    2stage-metallic flake
    3stage-clear coat

those badass low-rider cars typically have 8-12 stage paint bc of all the fades/designs/air brushing
