Just got mine back from the body shop last week (roof, hood, bumper). The roof paint started failing at about the 6 year mark. Dark blue, BTW.

Do you wax your truck every 6 months or apply a ceramic coating and maintain it ?????

This is my 18yr old truck with 75k miles on it , that is the OEM Impulse red Pearl paint . There is no issues with the clear coat and has a deep glossy shine

I do live in the Desert and the truck is exposed to the hot weather a few hours daily

It was very rare that my truck would go a month without getting waxed. Only Mequiars products.
It hasn't been every Tacoma that has been this way, but many are. I see them every day.

Impulse Red Pearl! My favorite color! I just happen to have the same color on my 2007 reg cab taco :)

No paint failure issues of any kind here. A few dings and scratches, but no paint issues. This is a NH truck, parked out in the weather summer and winter. Never waxed it, hardly ever washed it (that's why they invented 'rain'). I reckon the paint issues are from certain color formulations in certain years...

White paint also had its share of failure. Sure proper care plays into it but I think much of the problem is because of EPA regulations. The clear coat on my X Runner also red was coming off in various places. The speedway blue TRD Sport is also peeling up clear coat. What are you gonna do. What you can do before it really gets bad? Buff it out and apply ceramic coat. That will slow it down

Same thing on my 2015 tacoma. Washed monthly, waxed every 6 months with Adam's. Toyota said there's nothing they can do and non issue in their mind

Do you live in a desert climate and park outside?

Sorry I should have Included that! It is parked outside in East Bay California! I really did not expect this kind of failure. I have a similar color 2010 mazda in the same condition that never gets washed or waxed and has no visible failures

Had to have my ‘05 black roof painted. The hood and top of the doors on the passenger side are now shot also. Drivers side doors are fine. Sun has to be the cause as the passenger side gets full sun on my driveway.

I'm seriously considering bedliner on my roof. Was quoted 6000.00 to repaint just the faded panels. I think linex would be <1000.

It’s been done by a couple guys with roof racks. They did their pillars too.

Virtually every blue 2nd gen Tacoma I've seen around here has had peeling roof/hood paint, some really bad. Black too but not every time, seems literally every blue one does though after a few years.

Mine was starting to do the same thing. I caught it in time and went the vinyl wrap route to the hood and the top.

My roof had a small spot that was starting. I vinyl wrapped my roof and hood and it's really kept it at bay. Like frozen in time. Plus it protects quite a bit from my activities. Less to polish. Less to care about. It doesn't last forever, but as long as you replace it every now and again, it's good.

My 05 did the same. Sanded it down and raptor lined it.

Whatever you do going forward, don't let it get to this point (see rust on roof):

Welcome to owning a Toyota. My two '06 Tacomas, '07 Tacoma, and '08 4Runner all have shit paint. Every single horizontal surface has peeling/cracking clear coat. I hope my '20 4Runner is different, but I'm not holding my breath at all. No idea why Toyota cannot get its shit together with paint.
