Wow this sucks I feel for you guys. Toyota accepted fault for the blazing blue pearl trucks. I wonder why not the white trucks.

They're fighting me on my super white but I think they'll come through. I'd like to get it fixed before it looks like that.

Toyota said they will cover this side as a “good deed”. They won’t even cover a rental car while my truck is in the shop. They said they are repairing it outside the warranty. Like I said before they knew about this issue the last time it happened to the passenger side. Toyota needs to own up for a crappy paint job. I still haven’t dropped my truck off yet I’m still trying to fight the $40 a day rental they are not willing to pay.

    Hi All,

I created a thread, not knowing this one was already gaining steam @ https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/paint-chipping-on-2016.647380/#post-22467269

The dealership near me said I'm the third super white that's come in THIS week with the same chips on the rear door, but the chips under the hood are new. I'm out of warranty at 46K, but the dealership seemed willing to fix the chips - They could have said f*ck you, go home you clown, and learn what a warranty is so I'm grateful they're wanting to resolve it at zero cost. Fiancé is in the market for a 4Runner, so we might have to stop by after the Taco is painted up for some paper work.

Wish I could make this up. Took that photo myself. Toyota bought this one back from the owner. Traded it in on a new Tacoma.

If it has not been stated before. The reason the whites are doing this is because white is the only Tacoma color that is truly single stage. The clear coat is mixed with the base coat when the factory paints it. All other colors get base coat, then clear coat separately. This is JMO of why this is happening.

My dealer rep says this “never happens”. The guy working the counter knew right away though.

The paint should be under the 5 year 60,000 mile warranty .

Is there anything to suggest that this has been fixed in the 2020 MY?

I doubt it. If the color code is still 040 (super white aka pure white), then it is likely the same formula.

The black paint on mine is terrible. It is amazing how soft it is and easily scratched. I’m talking fleece jacket rubbing against it puts scratches in it. I know it’s black but never had this problem on my other cars. My 1st gen green was like a tank. I had it for 15 years and it looked brand new. I think all the paint on the 3rd gens is junk IMHO. Don’t get me wrong, I love the truck but it seems they dropped the ball. Hopefully the longevity more than makes up for it.

That's just rail dust. Every vehicle has it. Claybar takes it right out, it's not the truck.

My experience - I had a 2016 White TRD OR and it was bubbling above windshield right at the immediate crease. Rust color. Someone at dealer ( probably Jerry Lundegaard ) says the white trucks do not have a clear coat or protective coat.

    Stock, not for long
So I started having the same problem on my 17 Tacoma, right by the window seal on the back passenger door. Toyota has a recall on white paint but apparently is does not apply to Tacomas since they are made in a different location (Tijuana, Mexico).
Still under warranty so will try and get it fixed under it. Funny how most are right by the window.

Quick update. I took in my truck to the dealer because Toyota went today to look at vehicles that had issues like mine with the paint and I got approved to repaint the door. I guess there still isn’t a recall but hopefully this helps someone out. Keep in my mind I’m past my warranty So don’t let that discourage you
