Paint Flaking Off

My windshield is chipped more than the SW paint...

 

True. Spent 5 years in AZ, experienced that as well, and plenty of chips to my SW.

 

Most manufacturers have or had many problems making white stick. I know my Dodge did and a bud with a Ford also.

 

Wifes 2017 blizzard white carolla began to chip near the front fender. 2 small spots. Of course i was 2 months out of warranty. Platinum Protection Plan didn't cover it either. Took about 5 months but they finally agreed to fix it. Hope thats the end of it. No telling how many hours i talked on the phone with the Toyota help line.

 

All Toyotas bodies are dipped and fully submerged prior to painting into ED material then baked. This is really what provides the corrosion protection more so than the paint itself. Once this ED is baked it turns a drab Army looking green.

As for the adhesive issue? I don't know. All bodies are processed and prepped the same way regardless of the color. My best guess would be a material issue with the supplier. The fact that it's happening across multiple models produced at multiple plants tells me it's a material issue not a process issues. I believe PPG and NPA provide Toyota with most of their paint...at least in N American. Not sure about other counties.

I would say the majority of white vehicles are fine. But there seem to be batches that pop up here and there.

My Tacoma and wife's Corolla....even my daughter's old 068 Polar White Yaris all look great.

 

Open a claim form thru BBB, they will contact you directly for a consultation, have your proof ready and perhaps show them how others are having this same issue thru this forum and no resolution from Toyota. If they see a potential case, they will sent a letter to Toyota to redeem their fault, if they don’t comply within 90days, they will mail a legal letter as a final warning.

 

I'll add from the pictures I've seen....that this is less a base coat issue and more of a primer issue. The primer's purpose is to protect the ED coat from UV radiation and give the base coat something to adhere to. The fact that many of these failing vehicles are showing green ED points towards a primer adhesion problem.

But I'm speculating

 

Not enough people complains to Toyota Corporate so that is their excuse for not adding the 2017 Tacoma to the list which is ridiculous!

I had a 2010 Toyota Prius where a patch of the white paint peeled off the day before I sold it! I was pissed as it not only messed up the sale but I had paid extra for that color in the first place.

 

My 2015 2nd Gen has the same issue.
