So I picked up my 2017 TRD Sport DoubleCab this week, and while still at the dealer, the guy in charge of prepping new vehicles for delivery came out and said that they discovered some flaws in the paint on the hood. He said they tried buffing them out, but no joy. I don't have any pics, but it looks like small bubbles under the clear coat. There's not a noticeable difference when sliding your finger over the various spots, but there are a bunch of them across the hood in front of the scoop.
They asked that I drop the truck off today so that a rep from Toyota could look at it on Monday first thing.
Anyone else have any experience like this? The dealer was very straightforward, and I'm sure the imperfections are from the factory, and not something that happened during transport or at the dealer. I'm wondering what to expect as far as a resolution. I don't think anything short of repainting the hood is really going to correct it (can they redo only the clearcoat?), and am not relishing the idea of not having my truck for however long that takes.
On a side note, they put me in a stripped-down 2014 Tacoma regular cab short bed 4x2 for the weekend. Talk about a shock- no power door locks, no power windows, bench seat, 4 cylinder, no satellite radio, etc., etc., etc. And they're asking over $16K for the truck they put me in (dealer is CarMax- one of two in the country that also sell new Toyotas, and the loaner is one of their used trucks that's for sale), which has over 50k miles on it. So I guess even the stripped-down models hold their value. On the plus side, I at least get a pickup to haul some things that I need to haul this weekend, but man, I really don't like that stripped down of a truck after getting a taste of *my* truck!

I’d imagine they’ll offer to repaint the hood at a local body shop.

That would bother the hell out of me though because NO manual paint job can match the consistency of an automated factory paint job but that’s likely what they’ll offer you

What color is it? Would be difficult to match by just painting the hood alone without blending other panels to for most colors.

Since you already drove it off the lot, there is not much you can do other than let them fix it. However, I think itll be just fine. You will most likely get your hood refinished by a local body shop. The hood sits on a different plane than the rest of the body panels so I really don't think it is that critical to get a perfect match. They may not even need to blend into adjacent panels for this reason. Stop worrying and let them try to make it right. If the work is still not to your liking, you can always have them redo it. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

If you have not driven the truck, then I would get a different truck. I doubt the body shop will ever get it as good as factory. Depends on your expectations. I had the hood flex issue and they were on the 3rd time painting it and I traded it in on another truck. (the dealer treated me well and gave me a good deal). I believe they should take it back since they found the defect on delivery.

I got the truck back from the dealer today, and almost all the spots are gone. Seems that there's a Technical Service Bulletin out from Toyota for this exact issue (T-SB-0044-16). What the service rep told me is that they simply applied some heat to the effected area. I think they just missed a couple of the spots, and instead of having them keep the truck for another day to get the last couple of spots (it was the end of the day when I went to pick it up), I'll just take care of it myself at home sometime this week.

On a side note, does anyone know where we can get the details of TSB's? I'm curious to know what Toyota wrote up for this particular issue. All I've found online so far is this:

"Tsb: on some vehicles, when rapgard is removed, the paint may have a stained appearance. these stains appear to be under the clear coat (repainting this area is not necessary). the stain patterns are usually under wrinkles in the rapgard"

well I picked top my long awaited Tacoma this past Saturday so excited BUT unfortunately after I brought it home and under my led garage lighting I discovered these streaks across the front of my hood... I did not see them in the inspection bay at the dealer... I'm going to be sick if they have to repaint my hood... the TSB that Tacobuffet provided was helpful but TBS range 2017-2022 but it seems my 2023 was affected too. I sure hope it can be corrected... Dam IT!!!!!
