I'm pretty sure I read on here somewhere that the BBP paint is the one having big time problems like thisl

    Probably why they discontinued it.

Guess if I ever buy a new Tacoma I'll have to scuff the whole truck and lay down some extra clear before I drive it

Reviving an old thread here. My roof went from a few specks to a total bloom of rust. I worked with a paint guy to sand it to bare metal and put a rust treatment on it. Now in the paint shop and pulling the window we found the rust came from interior roof out. This is likely to poor treatment from factory rusting from air conditioning condensation.

If you are sanding and respraying the roof. Pull the glass you will likely find problems there.

Similar concept, smoother finish, color choices, UV protection

    Something to consider.

Here are more comprehensive pictures. This should be a crime. On Hawai‘i seems like every Tacoma 05-15 has this problem. Maybe the sun and our content AC use.

Rust it usually has to have a hole all the way through the metal. The problem is by the time that happens, it is well after the warranty is done. During the warranty it might start rusting but if it hasn't went through you are SOL.

Yes, that’s what perforation is. However there are some cases they will where they will warranty certain defects without being rusted through. For instance the issue with the door sills. Mine was bubbling and they warrantied that with only like 25k on the truck

I have a white 2018 Tacoma with 32K miles. The paint on my truck has 4 spots where the paint is dull (hood, roof, drivers door and passenger rear door). I took it to the dealer and they suggested it was likely damage from something. I don't park under trees at home or work and I wash it regularly (once each week or two). These spots just popped up about a month ago.

The Dealer now wants me to pay for them to buff out the paint (progressive sanding and then polishing) at my expense of about 300. I have 2 issues with this. First the obvious, why do I have to pay for it and also while this may improve or fix the problem in the short term it seems like the process will remove more clear coat and in the long term cause more damage.

Anyone one here understand what the risk of buffing the paint creates long term. I asked the lady at the dealership and she said there is enough clear coat on the truck that it would not be a problem.

I am having the exact same issues as everyone here with their paint on the roof of the tacoma 2016.
It started with a small spot near the front. I brought it to the attention of Toyota less then 1year into my ownership, and they denied my claim. Calling it bird poo, or tree sap, now 4 years in and its all over the whole roof! I again brought it to Toyota's attention, yet again I get denied! We need to get this issue resolved! It needs to be fixed by Toyota like the 2004-10 models with paint issues on blue, black and red.

Reminds me of the blue corolla issues from ~05-09
I've got an 2006 I had to sand to bare metal, fill in rust pits and repaint with spray cans (I'm cheap).
    Still runs strong

Mines a black 2016, now with 75k miles.
Bought sept 2016, first paint issue in Aug 2017 36800 miles. ( claim denied ) noticed how much worse just 2 weeks ago, and again ( claim denied ).

There has to be a good contact to get this fixed and toyota to own up to their mistake in the paint.

Toyota has agreed to repaint the hood and roof, now spots showing up on sides. Going to fight them to paint the entire truck

Keep your repair paperwork for proof that you wanted the whole truck repainted and Toyota refused at that point.

Fore sure, that was one of the worst colors for paint problems.
