I'd like to hear what some of you are paying paid to get your 2gen's repainted. I'm not really interested in the high end gucci paint jobs or the Low end Macco scuff n shoots. Those of you who opted to get a "decent" paint job reflective of the vehicle's age and worth. It's an older almost stock second gen with typical age related clearcoat issues, no bodywork to speak of. The truck is worth keeping but it's not worth throwing big money at a paintjob. Anyone got a similar type job done recently.

In the same situation. I can only justify a maacco job. Maacco is offering 200 dollars off labor how.do you approach this negotiation. I always feel like they claim it's in the estimate buy jacking the price up and claiming you got the discount. Tia

Here in my area $4500 to $6000 depending on exterior repair needed.

been quoted like $3k. Wouldn’t spend $3k to have a truck look the same and like a sedan.
If I was gonna drop money on paint it’d probably be smooth version tan Durabak or something.

It's a well kept '06 with 145K, despite being in nice condition, the paint sucks in all the typical ways. I could afford a $6K paint job but the truck isn't worth it at it's age, probably worth $10K as it sits w/o paint. It lives outside 24/7 in NM with our spring windstorms, blowing sand and 310 days of sun each year. It'll never be a really nice tacoma and the way I use it I don't want to worry about jacking up an expensive paint job. I'd do the prep myself and pay someone to shoot it before I pay that kind of coin or I'd take advantage to the access I have to a paint booth at the Auto Hobby shop here on the base. I'd rather not do the work myself but I'm retired and although I place a value on my time I have alot of it so I can work cheap. I've painted cars before and the prep isn't rocket science, just work. I'd probably do it again before I'd drop 5$-6K for a paint job. I know I can do reasonably better then Maaco and that's all I'm really looking for. I haven't paid to have a car painted in many years so I don't know the going rate, if $5K is typical for a decent 'mediocre 2 stage paint job, I'll prep it myself.

I just paid $2800 to have my 14 covered in Raptorliner. $700 for product. I did most of exterior prep myself. Figure a bed liner would like being outside more than clear coat

why not Durabak or something like that. It's supposed to be durable, cheaper to do
whether it's DIY or finding someone to do it for you.
They've got a lot of colors to pick from. If it's tan, that might look good, and blend into nature. Not only would the truck be offroad, bumpers and whatnot, but so then would be the paint.
Personally not really a fan of any stock color other than white.

Imagine this. You're off road. Whether it's a dirt trail, mountain, you name it. And the color actually has some semblance to nature rather than stick out like a sore thumb wearing what comes on a Camry. Might even be a future repairable color.
Potentially more resistant to offroad pinstriping scratches.
    Would make the truck unique.
The palette of colors Toyota sprayed thin on 05-15 seems lacking in comparison to what's been available on 70 LC, 5G T4R, 16-23 Taco, etc.
Probably would be easier to touch up inevitable cuts too, like fender trimming.

regular paint is still probably gonna have a finite lifespan and end up doing the same thing, and show imperfections easier.

In the same boat as my '05 is peeling bad on the roof, hood, and fender flares. At this point, I don't think a new paint job is a good return on investment since I plan on getting something else in about 2-3 years.

I am in California and honestly it's hard to find a shop that will paint your car unless it's the low end like Maaco. Most shops only want to do the insurance work because of the quick turn around and ease of work. If you do find a decent place to paint it is in the $5k - $10K range for a mid level paint job.

The trucks current color blends in pretty well around here, it's desert sand metallic.

I'm with you on the white as a color, my last 2 trucks were white and I liked the ease of taking care of them. Since changing colors is a PITA and allot of work to do it right, it's not worth it to me. I've considered the liner option and I'm not opposed to it in principal, I've not seen many I cared for except for some on videos and it was a brand new job, I'm curious what it looks like after 4 or 5 years.

Having worked in a paint shop, you would be looking at around 10k for a good paint job. Most of the labor is taking everything apart, prep, and re-assembly. Maaco wont take anything off. They will just tape off, scuff and shoot. So be prepared for lots of overspray, runs, orange peel and eventaully the paint to peel around where they tape

curious to know what you think since you worked in a paint shop,
do you think any of them would be open to something like doing a Durabak job, if supplied the parts?
Hopefully it would be a matter of reading the instructions, and same prep

though I don't know if it would require different tools, or potentially clog their tools or something given the different formula

Yeah they probly would do it. Bed liner type materials are not applied with a standard paint gun. They probly have a gun they use to apply bed liners and rock guard. Im not familiar with Durabak but I assume its applied the same way
