Really? I always heard it was the other way around and the single stage paint was the shitty one. And I also thought they were still using the single stage.

Lots of people on this forum with the same problem. Mine is shitty too but not that bad. Thinking about getting rid of it for something else because of this.

Single stage 040 white is tough urethane that can be buffed down multiple times to renew. The downside is that it oxidizes faster than a clear coat. This is the more utilitarian option. The Toyota white 2-stage paint looks better because the gloss coat is specifically targeted for appearance. But the paint layer below is not as tough as single stage. I sprayed my 260z with high-end 2-stage pearl black in the garage a while ago and have sprayed Tacoma parts with the 040 single stage (PPG brand) in the front yard. The two paints definitely serve different purposes. I always suspected the white was single stage since that was the traditional work truck color, but I have no idea if this was part of Toyota's thinking.

Since you don't list your location I am curious where you can get it done for $450 and have it look as if nothing had happened

The quote I got for mine is just north of $1100 and that is not blending into the adjacent panel

My local dealership took on the repairs of the paint flaking off from the driver’s side. They did a decent job. The paint matches, but there is a little ripple at the right lighting. I’m not too worried about it at this point.DA4EA31F-9550-4135-B531-BE7355FD2B4F.jpg

Mine 2017 white and no paint issues. I have about 5 pretty small rock chips so far. The paint is tougher than my windshield.
I bet the primer is ef'ed up.
BTW, my truck has a grey color primer.

Uuuummmm. Not sure what type of point you're trying to make by showing us your screwed up bedside. Yeah you might not have had paint issues but now that your bedside is bashed in by a foot you sure as hell do.

    Color of the primer...
Folks with the paint issues have the same color of the primer as OP. ( see other threads on the same topic )

I’d be careful buffing the white its only 3.5mm thick. The colors with an obvious clear coat on top are much thicker.

All the white trucks posting on TW with paint flaking off have the problem in the exact same place so they are doing something wrong when painting that area on the white trucks with the thin white paint seems like to me .

Push the issue and make them fix it. Just remember it’s only paint and a good body shop can fix it perfectly no problem. Especially white / will blend nice. Nothing is perfect. The sheet metal is painted by robots and all it takes is an area that’s not prepped right or an area not sprayed right and down the road this what happens.

Did you mean to say 0.35 mm? 3.5 mm sounds REALLLYY thick even for good paint. For comparison, the lead on a mechanical pencil is usually around 0.7 mm.

For those with high anxiety....here's my 5 year old Mexican built 040 with flawless paint. I do nothing special....wash it every couple of weeks and wax it 1 time a year with some simple liquid Turtle Wax.

Not all 040s are destined for trouble.

My 2016, 90k miles, no signs of this happening... The front bumper never really matched though, and around the engine bay it looks more like overspray... But it's a Tacoma, not a luxury vehicle. Hell, at this point I overlook all the rock chips and scratches as well.

I’m not really sure what that means but the Toyota rep and I measured several cars and the gray (magnetic?) was the thickest @5 while white was 3.5-3.7. That was what his thing said anyways.
