I finally got around to ordering a bamf light mount and a pair of kc slimlite 6” leds. While installing I decided to try to paint the grill. After reading on here my plan was to sand the chrome and hope for the best. I had a small rock chip and decided to try and peel the chrome instead. Worked perfectly, time consuming but I felt the paint would have a better chance at sticking. After the chrome was gone I sanded with 150/220/600. Cleaned with water (I only had acetone and brake clean both were to harsh and distorted the plastic had to resand the test spots). Masked everything off and applied 4 coats etching primer, 4 coats standard primer (let dry 1hr), 6 coats of paint and 6 coats of clear. With a dry time of 10-15 min between coats. Very happy with how it turned out. Truck is filthy and needs a wax should brighten up the paint for a closer match. As it is it’s pretty dang close. I used duplicolor perfect match paint and clear. Here are the before and afters. (hood is not shut and weather strip is still not installed, just finished it today and was to impatient)

Nice job... been thinking about doing this for years. Could you explain how you peeled the chrome off?

I got the paint at O’reillys. As for pulling the chrome I just used 50 razor blades haha piece by piece scrapped it up. I need to find some factory headlights to retrofit and paint!

Thanks dewayne! I thought about doing that but had previously hacked my grill up for the grillcraft so figured I’d try it.

eBay. I bought 4 cans many years ago knowing that I'd be doing some mods that would require some color matched paint.
