Today I noticed some bare metal under the passenger door side frame where paint had peeled off. On further inspection, the entire sill's paint had begun to disintegrate, and the plastic sill guard had started melting on both ends (see photo). I cleaned off all the loose paint and neutralized any possible chemical rxn but could not locate a source or cause. On the underside there appears to be a trail leading down from the sill to the edge of the frame and out the drain hole on my sliders (pics 3&4).

No noticeable smell or chemical present, no wiring issues around the sill, no indication of excess heat from anything, the door weather stripping is still in tact where it contacts the problem area on the frame. No other damage to the paint on the truck outside of what is pictured.

    Any clue what happened?

looking at the edge of the paint, it looks like it has a layer of body filler under the paint. i would assume some poor body work and twisting of body has caused it to pop off.

There was definitely some body repair done in that area. Additionally, is there any sign of a brake fluid leak between the master cylinder/reservoir and that area?

No brake fluid anywhere. I bought the truck @ salvage so the history is unknown, but it looks to have been repaired/repainted before I got it.

Poor body work is likely, but wondering what is causing the paint to come off around the relief hole on the sliders which were added by me a couple years ago?

once moisture gets under paint/filler, it travels. you could have a spot bubble up a foot away if water is able to travel under paint/filler.

I just realized that the last pic is the slider. To get that kind of failure on both the body and the slider, it sure looks to me like paint stripper or brake fluid. Brake fluid will bubble paint just like paint stripper.

this reminds me of the post where the GF had her leg on the door pull trim and wore the paint off of that from her "lotion" rubbing on it. lol

WOW! Are you sure you want to spray that stuff on your skin?

    Let's see.

    Brake fluid eats paint.
Ben's tick and insect repellent eats paint.

Therefore, Ben's tick and insect repellent = brake fluid. The 2 can be used interchangeably.

Currently deciding between expensive (correct) way to repaint or cheap (rattle can) way. Since it's not too visible from the outside, likely going to try the latter.

Need a new place to store my bug spray though, now I know why it works so good!
