I bought the truck new, and noticed a while after I got it that the paint on the fender doesn't really match the paint on the bumper. Is this pretty common because of it being metal vs plastic, or does it look like the bumper was replaced or repainted?IMG_20191127_143306.jpg

That is some really heavy orange peel. Though the plastic base may be a contributing factor, the clear coat wasn't applied properly.

It can be corrected with some wet sanding, compounding, and polishing, but that would be best done by a professional detailer or paint shop. Doing it properly will require the use of a paint meter to track how much clear coat is left as it is leveled.

Plastic and metal usually don’t match but that’s a pretty big difference and judging by the orange peel, I wouldn’t be surprised if your dealer had the bumper resprayed for one reason or another.

That bumper looks like it’s been repainted, certainly doesn’t look like factory paint. It seems to be quite common for dealers to scratch new vehicles, repaint and not tell the buyer. I’d take a guess at that’s what happened.

No it doesnt, thats how factory plastics on tacomas look. Due to the dimpled nature of these plastics, they tend to look dull.

My Tacoma doesn’t Look like that, and neither does any car I ever owned. That’s a terrible paint match, not at all what you get from a factory paint.

After a few beers, it will look fine.
You are right, that doesn’t look good.

The bumper cover and flares have a slight texture molded into the plastic. Here are a few photos of an unpainted flare and a painted flare from a job we did last week. This tends to make these parts less glossy. If your bumper was repainted you would entirely lose the textured appearance and the bumper would be as glossy as the fender.

If you think that is bad, compare all the different color black plastics in the cab.

That’s so obviously different how did you miss it, that noticeable from across the lot.

That looks like a pretty stark contrast and some heavy orange peel...

Probably normal. My wife had a white Honda Crosstour and the plastic parts were noticeably more yellow than the metal parts. She was in a small accident and the bumper matched better after it was repaired by the body shop. They actually resprayed it twice because they were having trouble getting the plastic to match the metal with the same batch of paint.

That's normal. Go to the dealership and check out the different colors to compare. Some colors are worse that others but my Inferno shows a difference from the plastic painted surfaces compared to the metal painted surfaces. My buddy just bought a 2020 in Cement and his also shows a difference in color. Not saying it's right but it IS normal.

Does anyone know if Toyota paints their own bumpers? I work at a car assembly plant and due to a supplier painting the bumpers they are off color sometimes. We replace a large amount of them because of this issue.

PPG has a tech document for this. It's really hard to get bumpers to match without sticking a lot of paint on them. A lot of material = a whole nother set of problems

It's one of those things you don't notice because you don't think you'll need to look for it.

    Black? You mean purple? LMFAO

I just started noticing it the other day after having my truck a few months, and certain bits of the black trim definitely have a purplish hue to them in the light.
