Changing color will definitely add complications and imo won’t look very good for the simple fact that you’ll have different colors in the engine bay, areas around the doors and other places that will have to be taped. Unless of course you remove the interior, all exterior trim, engine etc. I’d stick with same color.

To do a color change you need to do door jams, trunk, engine compartment, remoce interior trim... really even doing the same color takes that to do it right. But lots of places won't touch those spots if the color is the same. That's a lot of labor and a couple extra days tieing up floor space.

Even with a color change you can omit all the interior work for a cheap job.

If I recall correctly, my son had a hood for a VW Jetta 2012 painted off the car at a body shop for $400.00. That was about two years ago. We brought the hood to him.The color match and texture was perfect. I would get an estimate and see what they say, The rest of the truck looks good, only the headlights need additional work it appears. I would not spend $700 for polishing on that. I could not paint it myself for much cheaper than $400 after buying materials and consumables.

Estimator at a body shop here. $700 to polish and seal that hood is a complete rip off and waste of your $. Take it to a real body shop (not Macco) and ask for a quote. It will be less than that $700 and will look so much better. I think that truck is a single stage (no clear coat) but the shop can add a flat clear after painting the hood and it will look great for a long time. A competent shop can match the hood to the fenders.
-- I am sure some have had a positive experience with Macco, but we have seen the work from the shop closest to us and it is just so bad. But, you get what you pay for and if you want an almost okay paint job then they are your guys. My suggestion would be to ask who your Toyota dealership uses for body work and go talk to them. If you don't like the cost then go to Macco, but do not waste your money having some dude come try to fix and then seal it.
BTW, ceramic coat done right is awesome. Single stage 25 year old paint not right for ceramic coating.

Keep us updated on what you decide.

A good paint job will improve the looks of the truck and your personal attachment to it. You’re also more likely to keep the truck with the added investment. They’re built to last a long time and are fun to drive. If you think you’ll keep the truck in the long run, I’d have it repainted.

Okay, thanks. That makes sense. Thinking the only reason I would invest that sort of money into a truck this age would be to give it a different color. We'll go with one of the sealant options on the table now. Thanks!
It wasn't the hood, it was the whole vehicle for $700. and that was the ceramic coating.

Just a polish and wax of the whole car including the clay bar was $380.

So minor update, I did find the receipt for the paint job at Maaco here in Orlando. $1265 for the painting in 2015. Carfax shows no accidents, but there was a small amount of body labor in the details. That's a little cheap yeah? Also, don't Pre-Runners usually have fender flares? I guess they took them off when they painted and didn't put them back?

So digging through the documentation and service records it seems my truck is actually a TRD. Shame. So it looks like when it was repainted the fender flares and graphics were removed including the badge on the B pillar and truck bed graphics.

If it had factory flares it should have holes in the fenders and bedside for the clips on the flares.
Body labor doesn't always mean body work. If they took the trim, mirrors, door handles ect off before painting that would all be body labor.

It does have holes in the wheel wells. The flares were there. I have the window sticker when it was a certified pre-owned Toyota.

Haven't read everything here but make sure your heat insulation "thingy" is not all tattered or removed. I removed mine because it was just falling apart and didn't want it wrapping around a belt or something. The heat from engine made the hood fade ten fold. I had a body guy tell me he just gets new hoods, it's cheaper than prep and paint for him. I thought he said they were 200 bucks....?? My hood is almost grey now on my black 98.

This^^^^ is very important. I know my 2nd gen. does not have hood insulation. It often is cheaper to buy a replacement hood and have it painted than to strip an imperfect hood and buy all the materials for that, do the body work, and then prime and paint. I think the one my son bought for a VW was around $120.00 or so? I remember in '79 I bought a gallon of Dupont Lucite Acrylic Lacquer for $60.00. Not that long ago, I bought a pint of base coat color for more than $60.00. Sandpaper, tape, spot putty... everything is expensive now. I just bought a quart of cheap lacquer thinner at home depot for about $11.00. I think I used to pay that for a gallon of cheap stuff to clean the spray guns. I guess depending on budget and general condition, vinyl wrapping, spray cans or prepping yourself and having it sprayed are good options. I don't know too many people that could not strip a hood with paint stripper and save a lot of money. Then bring it to a shop for painting.
