    Hey all,

In addition to my Taco, I just inherited this 2003 4Runner. It’s in great running condition with 93,000 miles; however as you can see, the paint is completely ruined by the Texas sun.

My question to you is: what would you recommend, paint or a wrap?

What are price differences and where would you go for service?

    Thanks.

Are you planning on keeping it for a while? That would dictate my choice.

Yes indeed, we plan to keep it until it will no longer run. It currently has about 93k miles, though it's already 15 years old. I'm hoping it will run another 100k miles with proper maintenance.

That would look amazing. Any idea what that might run as far as cost?

I know the prices on a good wrap have come way down as there are quite a few vendors now.
Pretty darn sure it will be less than a nice paint job.

An unusually high amount of pinstriping.
Wrap would be cheaper, but I would repaint it due to the damage of the original paint. Also, if the clear coat is flaking would the wrap end up with bubbles in it? I don't have much experience in this area so :notsure:.

Good person doing wrap will take care of all that. It’s all got to be cleared before a wrap goes on. They prep like paint .

go to tintworld in the colony and talk to Jeff, he owns that location and I've worked there on Saturdays in the past. he can go over pricing/advantages/disadvantages of wrap vs paint. wont try to sell you on a service either.

I would do vinyl wrap... clear coat will not be an issue as long as you can wet sand to atleast 600grit or finer.

This is how the roof looked after the initial sand and prep.3E980CA1-2082-4898-952B-01D2E47B624A.jpg

Finished product shouldn’t have any bubbles and if they do the new materials have air release technology that allow air to pass through the vinyl itself. This was not my personal vehicle but plenty of my customers here in NM have clear coat fade/chipping and vinyl is a cost effective and durable alternative to paint that is usually warranted for 30 days or 3 months vinyl from the suppliers is 3-5 year warranty...

    Maybe, maybe not.

For a wrap to look great, surface prep has to be done just like for a good paint job.

OP, consider how long you'll own the vehicle / how long it will take you to hit your 100k mile goal. And remember, when you get there, you'll have a high mile, low value vehicle. So be thoughtful how much you drop in up front.

I've found a local shop that charges about 2x a Macco 'high end' job, but with much better body prep and a 5 yr paint warranty. So they are about 1/3 a good shop, but adequate for a vehicle i have similar to yours
