paint over chrome

Sup all...

painted my rear bumper from chrome, to black....

this friday front bumper and surround!!

 

that looks 100 times better than the stock chrome.

what kind of prep are you guys doing to the chrome bumper before you spray it? Ive heard you have to etch the chrome and then use self etching primer ????

wash it Sand it down, i have a sander doesnt matter what grit, then apply primer then paint... , its recommended to use adhesive promoter but im lazy!

use duplicolor from kragen, and look at what its use for (bumper, tires, engine, etc.)

 

Rustoleum Self Etching Primer and rustoleum top coat,sand the chrome real good first. Use rough sand paper and a power sander

 

What kind of black did you use, flat or gloss? did you guys clear coat the bumpers?

 

I didn't on mine and its been about 5 months with no chips, just a huge gouge from jack knifing a trailer lol.

I sanded really good, self etching primered it, then painted with Krylon gloss black.

looks great! i blacked out my grill and front bumper, but still have the stock chrome on the back. been a little scared of doing it, to be honest. seeing these pics, though... i'm doing it. next patch of good weather (it's pouring outside right now...) i get, it's happening!

I never was a fan of painted bumpers or grilles but having a Taco with the painted bumpers and grille has grown on me and would not switch back and like they say once you go black you never go back!
