My boy's '07 is doing the same thing around all four. Really disappointed in the paint quality, as I've never had a vehicle do this at any age.

Why is there what looks like non-oem rubber and what looks like body filler in the top corner? Are all 2014 like that? The part thats chipping, I assume thats the 'lip' from rear door? See how mine goes all the way up, yours stops short before the rubber starts, thats why I thought it had been repaired. (sorry, I know my trucks dirty and cam on phone sucks!) Also, if you look at the refection of the clouds, they are smooth and sharp, if you look at the reflection of the 'house' it has an orange peel affect, but scroll to the bottom, look at the 'white' line reflection, its smooth again. Just wondering if thats normal. I could be over thinking it, but, lol, I'm an adjuster, I can't help it sometimes :)

OP has an access cab. You have a double cab. That area of the rear door is different between the two.

Doh! Didn't read his bio info, my bad.

Whats all the extra rubber for on the access cab?

doesn't look like extra to me. it's all part of the door seal....all connected. I went back out and looked at the truck and it doesn't look like anything has been done to it....to me it really does look like they missed a step in the paint process in that area.

The grey under the paint is the primer. So there is a primer protection there.

Honestly for behind door, go to the Detailing section. Casper has a tutorial for painting chipped and peeling paint. Its a sticky at the top.
I would not use this method for a metallic paint job where its visible because its not going to look perfect on non-white paint but behind the door tge rear goal is to prevent rust. Perfection isn’t needed in looks.
I would use that method to paint over

BTW I will tell you wax lasts maybe 4 weeks. Waxing twice a year is not enough. Get yourself a sealer. It will last the full 6 months between details.

I ordered some primer, paint and clear from automotivetouchup ( Thanks Modest Mods) and will try it myself. Watched videos on their site and a couple on YouTube. You are correct...my main goal is to prevent rust. I think once I spray it no one will notice it in that area except for me. Was quoted $700 to have it done at the dealer so I decided to learn how to paint...probably wouldn't try it on a more noticeable spot but inside the door...will give it a shot... $50 or so in materials as opposed to $700. Thanks...will look at sealers.

Not to bring up an old thread but my BRM X-Runner is peeling in the same spot exactly the same way as the OP's paint is. The thing is that I also found spots on the top edge of the fender where the hood sits and the inside of the hood as well. I think I am going to take it into the Toyota dealer and see what they can do. At least report it if anything.

No. I've owned the truck the whole time. Nothing at all happened to the truck.

It just looks bad every time you open the passenger door and see a huge strip of paint missing.

I'm going to see what Toyota says about it.

What does it look like on the driver's/passenger's front door edge that would potentially rub up against that surface?

Just for everyone's info, here are some pics of the paint flaking off in multiple places.

If anybody is a painter/body shop guru, I would be open to suggestions as to what to do. Keep in mind that the truck has 150,00kms on it and it does have some minor spots in the body that could be fixed (i.e. stone chips, grocery cart bandit scratches, etc...)

Is this an area contacted by weatherstripping? Are you using rubber dressing or a lubricant or something on the rubber?

Sand a bit and paint. Its going to look bad but its in the door jam.

The paint is failing so it will just keep peeling good news is primer is in good shape so no worries on rust.

Having painted quite a few cars and trucks ,the problem here is not in touching it up but where it will peel next without stripping the affected areas to the primer at least. Short of that ,you might sand it down (feather) to well bonded paint with say 320 grit wet dry paper, clean well with wax and grease remover and paint with automotive flat black spray paint after masking neatly. You wont have to worry about blending and it is inconspicuous in those areas. We used to test for adhesion by applying automotive masking tape to the paint and then pulling it off quickly, like yanking off a bandaid. If the paint pulls it's no good there. This can be an expensive thing to have repaired at a shop and they may not guarantee the work.

So it’s been a year since you were reported your paint problem. I’m looking to purchase a 2014 with 30,000 miles on it and guess what-it has the exact same paint problem!
How did it work out? Did it spread? Did you ever find the cause?
Has anyone else had this problem with the Tacoma’s
