My 2004 Tacoma has some rusting on the roof that is getting out of control. I found a couple threads here about repairing it but have no idea how much touch up paint I'm going to need.

If I had to do the entire roof about how much paint would I need? 1quart? 1 Pint, 1 Gallon?

    Thanks!

    I don't know.

But whatever the answer is, you're going to need 3x that amount. Because you need primer, (likely several coats) base coat, clear coat and some tools/skills if you are going for a restored look. In fact, the materials may well run you more than just having it done at Fact-O-Bake.

What's the color of the truck and the condition of the rest of the body? Are we looking for 'restoration' grade work, or protection for a workhorse?

www.monstaliner.com You might like it so much you do the whole truck. One panel at a time.

Or google rustoleum auto paint and something like '$50 paint job'. Better results than rattle cans on a surface that large.

technically, youll only really need half a pint. BUT! i would not attempt to do this on your own. especially if your asking how much you'll need.

but if youre going to try it anyways, you should at least follow some simple instructions.

MASK OFF EVERYTHING! unless you live in the middle of nowhere in the woods, try and make a personal spray booth for yourself and mask off all the parts of the truck you don't want to paint. OVERSPRAY WILL GO WHERE YOU DONT WANT IT TO.

if the rust is crawling into the window's weatherstripping, remove the windows that are preventing you from getting to all of the rust.

make sure to use something like marhyde one step on the rusty areas.

then use a primer thats roughly the same color.

sand the primer with some 400 grit sand paper and use a sanding block.

spray the paint onto the truck. you really can use less than a pint of paint so long as it's base color is the same.

water sand the paint with some 800 grit

    spray clear coat on top.

water sand the clear coat with something like 1200 grit.

voala, you just finished preparing your truck for 7 hours (mostly masking), spraying your truck for about 5 hours (including the sanding between coats), and did another 4-5 hours doing the final water sanding, polishing, buffing, and cleanup. and it still will NOT be perfect!

unless you know how to spray the paint and blend the color, your truck is going to look weird. plus youre going to spend quite a lot of money in materials alone. but up to you.

youre honestly probably better off asking your insurance company (only if you have full coverage) if they will cover your truck being painted due to rain and rust. should be since the weather caused it.

Whatever you use I recommend a rust-remover acid. KBS-coatings.com calls it rust blast, It kills the Rust and adds a coating of zinc phosphate to prevent rust. The Rust Seal coat is watertight so it will further prevent rust. Finally you will need to use one of their UV top coats unless you don't care about the paint fading.

My buddy did it with sanding/prime/paint and it came back through. The second time he got some rust acid remover and then bedlined it. So far all is well.

gr8dane posted some pics and videos of the repainting process he did with his kid here. probably a good idea to go through this post and see what all he did. but this is the kind of work you have to put into repainting just about anything on a vehicle.
