Looking for recommendations on buffing scratches.

My neighbors dog jumped up on the side of my truck (MGM paint) and left some scratch marks. I was able to buff all but the worst out with a microfiber towel and some toothpaste. It was getting dark so can't tell for sure if it went through clear coat but pretty sure it didnt. Assuming it didn't go through clear coat, any suggestions on a brand of wax or compound to best buff out the rest?

Planning on hitting it again with microfiber and toothpaste in morning then picking something up on the way home from work.

McGuire extra fine rubbing compound. Rub in a straight line but not hard, use a light buffing hand. If you can feel the scratch with a fingernail then its too deep.

Thanks, don't have a buffer but pretty sure a buddy of mine has one that I could use. I didnt feel the scratch with my fingernail and looks like clear coat is intact so optimistic when I see it in the light.

Just had to buff out a few small scratches from when someone bumped me in the parking lot at the gym. Here's what I did... Clean surface, clay bar, meguiars compound with a DA polisher, follow up with polish and sealant/wax. Take before and after and you'll notice a huge improvement if you follow those steps. Be careful with any compound as it can and will burn the paint if not applied correctly.

Edit: prepping the area is important. It's often overlooked and people rush to try to buff the scratches out and when you start with the compound it can create more scratches on the surface.

Dont have any more input regarding scratch removal but would recommend ceramic coating when you are all done with your scratches.

That stuff really works great and can save your paint sometimes. My sisters huge ass german shephard put his paws on the side of my box and only left tiny, barely noticable scratches.

I almost had a heart attack wnen i saw that dog leaning against my box haha!. I got black paint and im super anal about it. If i didnt have the coating, im sure it would be much worse.

    Good luck man!

“If you can feel the scratch with a fingernail then its too deep”

    the above is wrong, OP.

Even if, many of those can still be compounded and polished out... a good orbital and compound polish might be all you need.

Have you used this on a hood of a car when it's pelted with rock chips? One of our daily drivers is the highway /commute vehicle and the hood is covered in rock chips. Was just planning to have it resprayed in a few years but this might be another viable option

Yep, scratches rarely go All the way down to the metal. More often than not it's thru the clear coat and maybe some paint layer. A little tlc can get it back to normal

Yeah used it on rock chips on my BMW and you can't even tell they were there. Take your time watch the videos to see the process and it'll look perfect

Meguiars scratch x worked great for me, just buffed it with a microfiber cloth.
