Do the colors color of the grille match up with the color of the truck? I want to do this and I heard they didn't.

Awesome guide. I taped off the fake vents when I did this, and it was a pain. In the end it didn't come out pefectly, but from a distance you can't tell.

Okay I am half way through this and something went wrong.

I sanded the old paint to roughen it up, then primed no problem. first 2 coats of black no issue. I then let it dry 24 hrs, and thought I'd sand it and do 1 or 2 more top coats of black, then finish it off with a few coats of clear.

But after sanding the black smooth to put on the top coat of black this happened!

It peeled up on me!?!?!?!?!? What did I do wrong! and how do I fix it!

I'm hoping it just got too hot on me. I'm letting it dry and will sand tomorrow, then I will let it get cooler and then try painting again. Such a piss off.

Let me know if you guys can think of anything else!

I'm not a paint and body man, but I'd lay odds that the first two coats of black were still "off gassing" the solvents when you put another two coats of paint over them.

You should have done all the coats in succession, after the previous coat flashed off, so that the new coat would bind with it.

If you couldn't do that, then you should have waited until the first coats completely dried, measured in weeks not days, and then sprayed your last two coats.

What does the actual spray paint instructions say? It should tell you right on the can.

    Agent Smith,

Thanks for the reply. The paint doesn't have instructions on it per say, it's a custom mix. I was going by my other can, which says re-coat after 15-30 min or after 24 hrs.

I sanded it down again today and tried again, same thing. So I'm pretty sure it doesn't have anything to do with it being outside, my other project under the same conditions was fine. I used solvent (xylene and paint thinner) to remove all of the black paint. It basically wiped off to the primer.

I'm gone for the weekend, but I think when I get back on sunday I will re-mask, re-prime, and re-paint all in one go and see if that works.

I also just sprayed a small section with primer to see if that would wrinkle and it didn't. So at least that is good.

So, I stripped the paint off back down to primer. Re-masked and re-primed, re-painted and laid down my top coat. So far so good. I let the primer sit for 1 hour before painting as per instructions. Then painted 3 coats black 15 min apart as per instructions. Then let that flash for 1 hour as per top coat instructions and laid down 5 coats of clear 5 in apart as per instructions, looks pretty good. I'm going to let that cure for a few months and then I'm going to polish it up nice and smooth.

    It's pretty smooth now even.

Thanks for the help. TW to the rescue!

nice write up! that came out really nice!!

the only question i have is on sanding....im the kinda guy that likes krylon fusion type spray paints that dont need much prepping lol

so i want to try and spray paint the anthracite grey in the middle of the grille to match the surround and the body, black sand pearl.

what im trying to get at is what type of sanding should i do? is it a wet sand with fine grit like 400-600 or should i dry sand it using something a little rougher like 60-200? ORRRR should i just use a scotch brite pad and just scratch it up a little?

did you sand the clear coats as you finished each coat? ( i read somewhere that it will come out cleaner but not sure about that)

    thanks in advance!!!

also i saw someone post something about waxing it after 30 days? is it necessary to lightly wet sand the clear and rewax or will it be ok just spraying like 5 coats of clear and then leaving it?

I would assume with the internet and the way hackers, terrorist, etc are today....some might want to limit what they put on the internet
