i have a 2007 Tacoma with the stock chrome rear bumper.
I decided to take a gator blasé to it and scuff it up and then used dupli color bed armor spray can bed liner on it. the finish came out exactly how I wanted it but It is already pealing in spots that have been rubbed against.

needless to say my prep work was not good enough

    any tips?

I am hoping I can peel the bed armor off in large sections..
and then prime the bumper and re paint????

I also plan on painting a new set of rock sliders over the winder.
any tips on what to paint them with?
I want a durable paint that is flat black in color and and will have a texture to it for traction when using as a step rail.

after doing further research it looks like an etching primer may be the route to take?

when i painted my sliders, i first scuffed it up with a wire wheel on a metal grinder and sanded with 120 grit. then i used 409 to clean. next, i used a metal cleaner/degreaser that i purchased from industial metal supply in sun valley, ca along with a scoth brite pad. and last, i used acetone to wipe down just before painting.

as for paint, i sprayed two coats of primer and two coats of black. i sanded between each coat with 220 and used compressed air, 409, and acetone to clean before each coat.

it was a ton of work and maybe overkill. but it seems to be good so im not complaning. my paint is stuck on good except where i've grinded it off from off roading.

you can check it out in my build page: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/boden-build-2015-dclb-4x4.362640/page-2#post-10107479

Take your bumper to a shop that does chrome plating and have them remove the chrome in their tank.

Just go to you local body shop and order a unpainted OEM bumper and sell your chrome on CL. I went to my local body shop that has a Toyota account and they ordered an OEM unpainted bumper for $250 then painted/installed for $100. $350 for a perfectly matching OEM bumper. I sold my chrome on CL 2 days later for $250.

Toyota bumpers come unpainted for $250 or chrome for $650 so selling the chrome for $250 is easy, heck, I could have probably got more.

While too late to swap your bumper with someone who has a plain one, and actually wanted a chrome one, keep that in mind for the next time.

I'd do both the bumper and the sliders with Monstaliner. www.monstaliner.com

As stlhd suggests, a chemical strip is your easiest route to perfection on the bumper.

For my sliders I used a product called Speedliner. This won't help you much since you have to be a distributor to buy it. We bought into the company years back when we were painting. The thing I like about the product is it is "basically" the same a Rhino Liner with the ability to spray it out of a hopper gun (for bed liners) or a HVLP so I can control the texture. The over the counter bedliner stuff you buy at AutoZone generally won't last and is not nearly as durable.

Here are the end results on my sliders

Did the same for my Relentless Fab bars on the bed

And even the shovel mounted on the bars

For the rear bumper (mine was chrome also) I scuffed it up then painted it with self etching primer and painted it with a rattle can 040 paint code. Came out fine and hasn't peeled yet.

The front bumper was a different story. I've got too much invested in it so I had it professionally painted.

So really in the end it comes down to how durable you want everything to be. You can rattle can your sliders with flat black and if you get a scuff on them it's easy to touch up. But... it won't have any texture. For the rear bumper a rattle can was fine with me but I also plan on replacing it with a Pelfreybilt rear bumper so that was something I didn't want to spend a lot of money on having it professionally painted. My front bumper on the other hand was a different story. I wanted it to match the truck perfectly and it came out just like I wanted. And thanks to this thread I get to whore out pictures of my truck :woot:
