Painting calipers and skid plate

    I saw some posts about painting your calipers, but I'm still a little short on exactly what kind of prep work is needed before painting. Can someone enlighten me?

    Also, is it difficult to remove the calipers for painting? I have changed brake pads before on a car I had, but it's been a LOT of years... What about the rear drums?

    That's a pretty good how to. I'll add a few things from my experience the oher day

    I wasn't worried about painting the back of the calipers...so I masked the rotor REALLY well and painted it without removing the bolts.
    I used a filler primer first coat because the calipers are rough and I wanted a bit of a smoother look. You don't have to prime them if you don't want to.
    Follow the directions on the can or box of paint you use- It will affect the finish.
    Make sure to use the right product too...It matters.

    yup i agree. Just use some brake clean stuff with a small toothbrush first. Then mask it up good. DO NOT GET ANY PAINT ON THE BRAKES! That would be very bad. Then go slow using a small hobby brush. Most brake assembly's just has one bolt and it can swing away. I haven't yet worked on my taco's brakes so I'm not sure if its the same.

    Oh - you actually "brush" on the paint? It's not spray paint?

    i used the one you buy from wal mart. its a kit with everything inside. and yes i would brush it on. much cleaner.

    You can get spray paint...They make it. I used it.

    Spend the time prepping and you won't have any issues. Make sure you spray when the wind is calm.

    The pictures of the prep work I did weren't saved...But I used a whole newspaper and wrapped EVERYTHING

    Didn't pick up on it the last time- The rear drums are the same way. Prep and mask off well and you'll be fine.

    What about painting the skid plate? Would Duplicolor spray paint be good for that too? What about sanding/primer? Necessary?

    How hard do you plan on running around?? You might want something a lil more bullet proof (like rhinoliner) if you will be wheeling alot. If you are just driving around regular like...paint should work fine.
    Depending on color you can use different types-Duplicolor makes a "wheel and rim" paint or the "caliper" paint is suspossed to be a bit more wear resistant.

    Sand it down with 800 or so...Wipe it down down with alcohol or another non greasy cleaner. Prime and Paint. Bolting it off the truck is prolly the best idea. Give it the right time to cure before bolting it back on. Consider using some sort of clear coat or something if you want it to stay "nice"

    Not hard at all - some, but not a whole lot. One day I'll invest in some Bud Built under armor, but for now, it's just for looks.

    I went to O'Reilly's tonight and bought some Duplicolor spray paint and primer, and I found the Duplicolor Caliper kit that 808TrdSport talked about.
