Painting Stock Rims Easy

The reason they seemed over complicated or unnecessary was because some of us were painting the factory aluminum wheels, which is a whole other beast then painting steel wheels.

What kind of paint?

 

I used rustoleum primer sealer and rustoleum black wheel paint.

 

onlything i would recommned is get tape weight for the inside.. the silver hammer weight makes all the work look lazy bc you got this silver streak going around as your drive

 

You said you put two coats on....so the first coat was the primer? The primer sealer was black as well?

 

Looks great. How have they held up? It would be nice to see how they are doing in a couple of months. Nice write up.

 

first coat was adhesion promoter, no primer. And then I added a couple of light coats of paint. They have held up very well so far. No scratches, no chipping or fading. They look great still.

 

I did this and i used the scotch bright pad as said, and the paint kept on blistering even with primer. So i then used 400 gritt sand paper and no more blistering and they look awsome. But maybe the scotch bright pad that i bought had some type of chemical in it or something?

i wonder if it would be just as easy for the 17 inch sport rims?

 

I just painted my Aluminum 16" off-road wheels last week.

Index cards would not stay between rim and tire so I used masking tape.

I used 2 coats of Rustoleum Sandable Primer, then 2 coats of Rustoleum Professional High Performance Flat black enamel.

It came out really nice...

 

Power coat will last much longer. Spray paint would not last through the winter here in Pa. And you can not just move the weights to the inside of the rim. Tape on color matched weights like on sport bikes might work.

Bad idea. Weights are put on the inside and outside to completely balance the wheel and tire. Moving them from the outside to the inside may throw off the balance.

how long does this last before chiping?

 

Is there a paint you can use that doesn't shine so much?
