Yeah, a teenager in a rush did that butchery; just about guaranteed the issue is in that mess. Truck deserves to be cleaned up properly RE that wiring cobjob. Good tips here already, I just wanted to say yikes.

This is what I would like to do. But the wires are spliced and crimped so far in, I can’t even see them or get to them. It’s going to take me ripping the entire truck apart
Only green/red wire I can find connects to a 2 pin connector along with a green and white wire. That connector is not connected to anything. I think it would go to the clock, but my truck is not equipped with a clock

Alright I just found that coming down from up in the upper loom of wires, there is a green wire with red stripe. This wire is connected to the wire that is connected to the ground connector on the radio. What is even going on? I am so lost

Update: Found that the brown wire coming from the top loom, gets spliced to a red wire, goes down the loom, loops back up to the top loom, and connects to the white/green wire.

Well I figured it out. It was exactly what I first thought it was, as well as ULURU. The green/red (Illumination) wire was wired into the ground wire to the radio. Why? I have no idea. And the white/green wire was wired into the factory brown ground wire.

The radio turns on, as well as the lights. But I guess my question now is, what do I do with the white/green and green/red wires? Do they need to go to anything or can I just leave them disconnected and call it good?

The green wire with the red stripe is the panel wiring. It shouldn't be going to ground. Disconnect that wire. If it is (was) the original illumination circuit for your radio, that is why your panel lights are shorting out. Whoever did the install did what my ex GF's dad did. Disconnect the GR-R wire, put a wire nut on it, tape it up, and secure it. You don't need it unless your radio supports dimming from the panel. Most aftermarket radios do not.

Missed your follow-up post. Glad your found it.

As I wrote above, you don't need the GR-R wire, unless you want to connect some cool under-dash foot-well lights. (I used to use old Christmas lights for this in my '78 Buick, and ran them off GM's panel light circuit - the grey wire I originally wrote about).

I don't think you'll need to worry about the W-GR wire. That goes to ground, too. I'd do the same. Wire nut it, tape it, secure it, or use it as the ground for your foot-well lights.
