But you would be able to comment as to their performance in an 'impromtu parking situation.' :)

....well, I would have taken on changing the pads and cables myself but I don't think I have the tools I'd need for the axle bearings and seals.

So if only the passenger side rear axle bearing is showing signs of leaking should I only have to have that side replaced or is this one of those situations where both "need" to be, or "should" also be replaced?

If it ain't broke don't fix it ?
    Or
Dam well sure if I don't that sucker is gonna leak and ruin my new brake shoes in 5000 miles.
    Your choice
    HOWEVER.
MAKE SURE YOU REPLACE THE DIFF VENT.

Was just wondering if it was like "should replace the thermostat if you are doing the water pump" kinda deal

Ummm...diff vent? First I've heard of that one:confused: Is that something that the dealership would do anyway or do I have to request it?

    Anything else, anything...?

Your parking brake cables are broken - root cause. There's a how-to video on the South Main Auto YouTube channel if you need some guidance.

Yeah, I figured that out and was hoping that would be it ...but upon further investigation I found (axle?) grease in/on one of the brake drum/pads...so now there's that too ...

I'll watch that vid thou, in case I still end up replacing the cables myself, but I'm thinking I'll just get the shop to do it at the same time.

The diff vent has a big habit of plugging. It's not really a vent per say but a pressure relief. So if that plugs then excess pressure builds inside the rear axle which can and does push gear oil out the easiest place to go. Yeup the axle and pinion seals. So it's something I do all the time when I replace axle seals. Of course I would request it as a matter of fact because some do not bother or realize.
Your gonna need brakes, cables ,seals , bearings. All the brakes come off anyway so just let them do it all. Your in there.. One and done.

So this would be the time to do the relocation project too wouldn't it?

Prevents water intrusion when submerged hot.

Yeup if he wanted to but then he should do it now before it goes in. Then he would not need to buy a vent and not worry about pressure buildup after repair before he did it.

Makes sense...re the pressure build-up. Out of curiosity, can you tell if the vent is plugged? Either before or after it's removed?

See if you can spin the top part of the vent.
