I have a 1999 extended cab 4X4 TRD that had the parking brake cable break on. I have a unique problem. In the process of getting the old cable out of the handle, I broke off the little pin that holds the parking brake handle inside its guide. Now, because the locking plates that keep the brake engaged are not compressed, I am unable to get the handle back in the guide. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?

And as far as the broken pin has anyone had any recommendations on what to use instead? The pin completely sheared off and is stuck inside, which I can probably extract with my screw extractor bits.

iirc if you remove the whole mechanism, you can punch the out from the other side. i'd buy a replacement from the dealer. it's kinda a weird shape and has teeth all on the outside.

Just what is broken on your parking brake handle?

The cable broke or the pin that keeps the handle from pulling out broke?

It has been so long I would need to stick my head under and look at things

The pin that keeps the handle from pulling out.
It looks kindve like a brass piece sticking off the shaft. I'm wondering if I can weld it back on or drill and tap something in to simulate the holding pin.
    Thank you for any advice.
If need be ill buy another mechanism

Does that also close the parking brake switch when the parking brake is applied.

Anything you can fabricate will most likely work.

Yes its the tab that hits the switch for the parking brake light in dash

You can unplug the switch till you get things fixed.

A425CF9F-52AB-499B-9C90-06D2791AE275.jpg Mine suffered the same fate. It may or may not have been my fault, that’s another story. I was able get the piece that was still stuck in the shaft out which then allowed me to JB weld the broke off part back in the hole. Doing this left just enough sticking out to depress the light switch. Me and that parking brake haven’t been on talking terms in quite a while.
