Parking brake stuck… please help!

    I am experiencing the same problem intermittently...I have a full rear brake job DIY next week..
    Here is where your problem most likely is..
    The aluminum connector between the parking brake cable and the wheel hub back side crack/breaks so you pull the brake and engage it and then it can't release the tension...
    All prompted by my parking brake sticking and I can see the aluminum connectors on the back of the hub broke and the cable is free moving...

    Might need to look in to this more, I was able to slide the, don’t know what to call it, line/conduit that the cable runs inside of, up away from the backing plate at the wheel and expose the cable itself.

    Seems like you’re saying it should be fixed there

    It's not "fixable"
    The fix is to replace the entire parking brake cable..
    Think about a hand brake on a bike...you pull it, brakes engage because the tension is carried through the gable that is securely anchored at both ends. With the anchor point broken on the wheel back it allows the cable to build tension without moving. You would have to "weld" the anchor point back to the rear wheel but still have the cable move freely within it. I would guess a solution would be to grab the exposed piece of cable and "pull it" out of the wheel and then push it back in...when you pull the parking brake it pulls that cable out of the wheel. without the external sheath attached the cable can't put force on retracting back into the brake and push the spring that releases the brake engagement in the drum.

    HOWEVER BIG HOWERVER!!! you cannot fiddle with the E-brake without chocking your wheels first..or else you could release the brake and the truck could roll right over you.

    I have the 4x4 manual transmission 2010 access cab.
    These are the parts I just ordered for the parking brake, 5 bolts for the attachment to the rear wheels (needs 4 but who knows...) and the 4 extra bolts for attaching the parking brake lines as needed if I strip some removing..
    Toyota of smithfiled RI had the best price at $84 from an MSRP of like $140 for EACH side cable, Left and Right

    There is merit to using the parking brake. I have a 6 speed and even use the parking brake in the garage flat floor parking lots etc. Have never had issues with any of my Toyotas 2 with 300+ miles on them.

    What's your secret ? You're from Maine and no problems - I'm from NJ and salt from roads in winter causes nothing but problems - Must be plenty of salt in Maine.

    Yeah i dragged my right rear tire 100 ft locked up in the snow in February. That was my first wtf? Lots of reading and stupid Toyota using a $0.50 aluminum anchor when a $0.75 stainless would last forever

    I’m from Maine and had the same prob you had multiple times. It always happened when I used the parking brake after a wet snow/rain and got real cold overnight. I quit using the parking brake in scenarios like that and haven’t had a problem since although a couple years back the parking brake did need to be replaced.

    Just take a peek back there and make sure the rubber grommet that seals the star wheel adjustment is in place and not allowing water in the brake.
