Planning on replacing my failing steering shaft on my 1999 SR5 3.4.

I've seen the threads on doing the tac weld fix but I would rather just replace the shaft at this point. I do a lot of technical off road driving and the truck is almost at 300K, I'd rather not have a failed shaft out in the desert.

When turning the wheel and looking down at the shaft from under the hood, I can physically see the shaft clunking as it turns. Does this mean just the upper intermediate shaft needs replacing? when I get under the truck and look at the joint joining the shaft to the rack it seems fine.

Just looking for part numbers. Every site I search comes up with different pictures/numbers.

if someone has a video or pictures that would be helpful too. all the videos I find are on 2nd gens which are completely different shaft designs.

    thanks

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
You are searching by entering your VIN unless your steering shaft has been swapped that will give you the correct part number for your truck.

you can never go by pictures in web catalogs.

I would contact Mcgeorge toyota with your vin #, they can tell you for certain which is right part...
even a few months mfg date can be a totally diff part........these guys want your business and they have the staff on hand to do that......

I'm same as you, with these designed for break away for front end crashes......and longevity dont mix well....I need a backup.....

The ones before 2001 dont have that bearing/seal thing going on at the fire wall.....should be cheap.....at least mine is that way.....for shits and giggles I'll get the old one tack welded........
