Hey folks, 3rd gen owner looking for help from 2nd gen guys. I installed an 8.4” diff into my 3rd gen because I wanted a TrueTrac LSD. Outfitted it with 5.29s and all new bearings/seal using all OEM parts from the dealer for a 2015 Tacoma. All of it went together perfectly.

All of that went fine, except during the install the rear driveshaft would not seat in the 8.4” yoke. The centering ring on the 3rd gen driveshaft yoke was too long and would bottom out inside the yoke on what appeared to be a machined very slight shoulder. It just barely would not seat, with bolts cranked all the way down. Pics attached.

    IMG_3211.jpg IMG_3213.jpg

To remedy this, I took a flap disc to the centering ring and sanded it down a bit. This got it to where I could bolt it up. I was so far into the install by the point that I found out the problem, that there was no way I was turning back and reinstalling the old diff. So sanding it was the fix.

I am now getting some driveline vibes at 75-80+ that I definitely didn’t have before (I’ve had 5.29s for 10 months no issues). I am thinking my non uniform sanding is what’s causing the vibes but honestly I don’t know. Easiest way to rule that out is to buy the correct yoke from a 2nd gen, but from the Toyota parts sites I don’t see the part listed. Only entire driveshafts.

So, can anyone help me find this?

If it’s not that, I wonder if it’s the flange. It’s brand new but I cranked on the bolts pretty tight trying to get it to seat. I hope I didn’t bend it out of true trying that. Though I went with a crush sleeve eliminator so I can just replace the flange if I have to.

    Thanks for any help!

For clarity, I’m looking for this part to try first:

Turns out I’m supposed to have 1350 u-joints while the 2nd gen had 1330, so this may be worse than I thought. Don’t really want to use a conversion u-joint.

Is there a shop nearby that can balance the driveshaft?

Thanks, that’s basically what I’m finding to be the only option so far. Every 8.4 pinion flange I can find has that shoulder, so I’m not seeing it as an option to buy a new 3rd gen 1350 yoke and just install a new pinion flange.

just don’t really want a conversion inking because they’re only greasable and I hate the added maintenance.

Maybe, but the driveshaft was always already balanced up until today. And it might still be. Gotta keep in mind with 5.29s I’m turning like 4500 driveshaft rpm when the vibes start. Most shops don’t even balance close to that high.

I’m not even sure my sanding job caused the problem. All I know is I swapped axles and that was part of it, and now I have problems. Wish it wasn’t so much work to just swap back to the stock axle and see what happened.

Eh, just lube it every oil change while the oils draining. Takes 2 minutes

True, In the meantime maybe get your hands on a belt sander and try to even out the side of the centering ring you sanded unevenly

I think for testing I’m going to remove the rear driveshaft tomorrow and go for a drive. If the vibe is still there, then I know it’s on the axle itself and not related to my flap disc sanding. I really hope that narrows it down.

If I did in fact warp the flange, then I should still get a vibe. But I doubt I warped it, they’re decently strong.

If I determine it is the rear shaft, then I’ll do the yoke and conversion joint, at least in the short term.

I pulled the rear driveshaft this morning and went for a cruise in FWD. Hit up to 80-85 on the highway and there are no vibes. Must have been my sanding handiwork, which just barely knocks it out of balance at around 4300-4500 driveshaft rpm. At least that means I need to work on the driveshaft and not the wheel bearings or diff.

I replaced the tcase yoke on my Tom Woods, and had a vibration for 2 years didn't think it needed to be balanced, but it did.

Spicer makes the part you're looking for, I just don't know the number. Maybe ask Tom Woods if they know? Or possibly a place that builds driveshafts for Toyotas?

So…..I didn’t like the idea of driving to work vibing away for a week or more. So I decided to swap the stock offroad 8.75 axle back in. I’m glad I did, because vibes are gone.

I cancelled the orders on the u-joints and yokes.

I am now leaning towards either flange runout or pinion angle differences. I assumed the angle would be the same from the 2015 this axle came from to my truck, but maybe not. I’ve done some measurements between and so far they seem to be different. I’m coming up with 23° on the OR diff (pinion pointed up in relation to spring perches), and I’m coming up with 11° on the 8.4”. That very well may be the difference, at 4300 driveshaft rpm I’m sure it doesn’t like the angle being low by 9° (assuming I measured right).

There’s a thread on how to zero out the angle of your drive shaft floating around TW somewhere. 2nd gen forum I believe. I’ll search for it later and post it up
