i found originally found a bad spot in the paint on my New Tacoma the day after I bought it. Upon further inspection there are a lot of particles on almost every panel, over 20. I’m sick about it and don’t know what to do. Toyota came and looked and will fix it, but then I have a new truck with body/ wet sanding done all over it. Even if they repaint the truck it does not come with a warranty and will likely fade or peel in 3-5 years.

What are my options? I think I should be able to return the truck. It came off the truck w 0 miles. I realize no paint jobs are perfect but something odd happened here. The dealer. Toyota. And I agree.

Bad paint doesn't make the truck a lemon. If Toyota is having it repainted, then I don't see the problem. The paint on Toyota vehicles in notorious for being weak. Let them do the repaint and move one.

EDIT after picture posted: I have a couple of those on my paint as well, but I drive freeways every day and it already has rock chips alot worse than that in year 1. I would not have even complained about that in the paint unless it was huge or in large clusters.

There are a few clusters of 4. I get what your saying but it doesn’t seem like the quality I expected. The Toyota guy said repaints peel after 3 years all the time.

Maybe try some IronX to see if it releases from the paint.

It is dirt particles trapped in between paint layers. Probably was a spot touched up either at the factory or dealership. I personally wouldn't worry about it. You have 3yr 36000. My Dealership warranties for life of ownership if they paint. Always remember if it is sanded and buffed they have removed life off your paint job. I Painted for and ran a Paint shop at a Toyota dealership. You rarely ever see one come off the line that way. Its been re-coated somewhere.

I am not sure where it was assembled.

I agree it seems like something was done to this truck or something. I looked at all the others on the lot and couldn’t find any others that compared.

I honestly feel like they should just trade it out because even they agree this is crazy.

Thanks for you input so far.

Why do you say it will peal or fade in 3 to 5 years? A good body shop will give you a way better quality finish than the factory. Dealers are not usually good quality though. So pick your dealer carefully if Toyota has offered to fix it.

The guy who works for Toyota said repainting does not have a warranty past the original 3 years and he sees issues with repainted trucks in 3-5 years often so repainting does not seem ideal.

Aftermarket paint is supposedly weaker than factory paint. At the factory it’s baked on and in a shop guys cut corners and don’t follow proper prep procedure. Prep work is everything when it come to adhesion.

When you can see the mistakes right in the finish you know the work is bad. A proper repair to remove contaminants in the paint would require the vehicle be completely disassembled then acid dipped and repainted then put back together a cost that could exceed the value of the vehicle. If it were me I would send a certified letter to Toyota Motor Sales USA Attn: “agent for service of process” at their office in Plano Texas and a courtesy copy addressed to the dealer that sold the vehicle. In the letter state your claim, the steps you took to address the claim, the proper remedy repair and then your proposal to swap the vehicle. Include all copies of documentation to back up your claim pictures, dates, times, names of people you dealt with etc. Don’t lie don’t exaggerate be professional. If you address them in writing they will respond to you as the warranty is “performance contract” between the owner of the vehicle and Toyota. Good luck

    Here is a final update.

I had to file a claim with Toyota asking for a trade in (denied). A claim with an arbitrator and Toyota (again denied by arbitrators). I then spent a lot of time on the phone with the GM of the dealer who happened to agree with me. Then I escalated this to the regional VP of Toyota in my area. Took 3 months total.

The dealer and Toyota ended up working it out and trading me in straight up for a new truck.

I think the dealer ended up helping more than Toyota who gave me a small trade credit.

There are some good dealers out there I guess.

Unfortunately not enough dealers are willing to walk that extra yard for you. Getting these mofos to do a simple TSB requires an act of Congress. I'm glad your experience was a pleasant one.

I have those in my paint plus a bunch of rail dust burned into the paint on the lower doors, quarters. Nothing I could do to get it fixed by them. Glad toyo helped you, since they help no one with anything.

A good paint job won’t peel in three years. I shitty Toyota paint shop one might. If you really wanted painted see if they’ll let a private shop paint it. At a good quality shop the paint itself is usually guaranteed not to peel, my paint guy offers a lifetime guarantee but then again he’s not cheap and takes pride in his work.
