Does anyone happen to have the wire repair terminals they haven't installed yet? One of these: 1- 82998-74030 Terminal Repair W W $12.60,
1- 82998-74040 Terminal Repair W W $12.60, that they could try and take some measurements of? I want to try to find an alternative pin instead of paying Toyota $13 each. I still plan on adding all 3 other handles to my Tacoma, and really don't want to spend almost $80 just on pins and wires. Some of these types of parts are dirt cheap, but it is a matter of figuring out exactly which part is needed. DigiKey sells tons of stuff like that, and this website also sells some stuff that may work: http://www.cycleterminal.com/index.html (they have some Honda COP connectors I need for my car).

Probably length, width, height? I don't really know how these things are classified, but I can try to figure it out.

Great mod, and great instructions Victory. Got it installed tonight and everything works great. With a pass through tool I have getting the wire through the door was the easiest part for me. As everyone else has said this should have come standard on the truck like it did on our highlander.

Here’s a couple of pictures. I’m not sure if they will help. The paper clip is a size #1 (small).
DAC2CCF0-D715-49B1-A06A-B71C1A50FF32.jpg E0185F2E-1C74-48E0-A3E6-0D131D8F4DC3.jpg C60C22C2-F9C3-47C2-82B6-6F3CDA92FFED.jpg 1F95648D-26FA-422E-8226-8A58043F47F0.jpg image.jpg The pins in the door handle are roughly 1/4” to 3/8” long and maybe 1/64” thick. They’re recessed in the handle and hard to get measurements or good pictures. Hope this helps.

If you want more accurate dimensions, you could pull the one out from the Driver side door handle. Might give you more info then what you can get from pictures.

    @MAS Thanks for the pics!

I actually took some time and dissected the driver's side door handle connector, and ended up finding some pins and wires that will work perfectly. I'll post a bunch of pics later on tonight after work. So it turns out that I have a bunch of these pins w/ wires attached, and can sell them for much less than what Toyota wants for theirs. Also, there is a wire cover that snaps onto the connector and the wires attach to it in order to protect them inside the door. I have pics of that part, and the part number that I'll share too.

I'm hoping the 2020's will have this as an option so I can retrofit the brains too. I don't want all of the doors to unlock when I unlock the drivers door. MY wife's Forester also has keyless entry on the hatch. It's just an antenna and two rubberized buttons (open and lock). Keyless on the Taco tailgate would be sick too.

It has been confirmed that 2020s will have passenger door handle included in the Smart Key system.
Retrofitting the Smart Key computer will most likely be big money though.

I will be doing this mod soon and look forward to what you find out. These pins are fairly cheap, but I know how difficult it is to try and find ones compatible.

    Thanks!

Finished the handle mod just now. Like many have already posted, I want to also thank @Victory for his time in documenting his mod process and then posting it. I had reached out to a few of you also in my preparation stages and want to also say thank you to you guys in taking the time in helping me.
Fishing the wires through the rubber boot was made simple by others sharing their tricks from their installations. What took the longest for me in the installation was carefully cutting and peeling back the sound deadening material I added last year when I upgraded my speakers. It was truly worth the time in doing. Cheers

I just ordered the handle but had trouble with the pin prices until now. I have been looking for a suitable sub for the pins as $13 each seemed a little steep.

I mistakenly had not looked at this full post until a few minutes ago. I now know (from the pictures) the pins come with some wire already attached. That should make the installation a lot easier...I think.

I now need to try and modify my order to add the connector and the two pins. Can't wait to finish this project.

    Thank you @Victory for sharing.

@Pilvr83 would you like to try the pins that I have? I have a bunch that work very well and won’t charge nearly what Toyota charges. You could be a test mule, but I’m pretty sure these pins will be great. I’ve test fit them in my drivers door already too.

Curious if these work. I really want to do this mod and even price savings would help

Yes they will work. Message me if you'd like to try a couple. I'm going to be ordering some of the door handle connectors too.

I am tempted but the "test mule" quote scared me. I am a "one trick pony" so to speak. I don't want to dismantle and try again. I have a feeling the rubber ribbed boots on the original parts are there to keep the pins from vibrating loose. I sure do like your idea...maybe a little glue or RTV to hold the wires...

After having put these together in the last week, I agree that the rubber ribbed sleeves serve a good purpose.

Totally understandable. The rubber boots are there to seal out moisture. Its really not much of an issue inside the door up there, but I'll be ordering some to add onto the pins/wires I have.

If I didn’t already have the expensive Toyota wires I would purchase these. I see no issues using them if they fit snug on the pins in the handle. Just my 2 cents.

If your Taco has the Entune radio you can control how the doors unlock. For my truck ('17 Tacoma OR) the default was one click to unlock the drivers door and two clicks to unlock all of the doors.
I changed my truck to have all of the doors unlock with a single click (tail gate too since I installed the Pop-n-Lock).
